William Melvin Bullock, affectionately known as "Mel", passed away peacefully at his home at Everlan, in Hixson, TN, on January 6, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on December 2, 1938 in Hollerin' Point, Supply, North Carolina, Mel spent his early years along the coastal shores of Holden Beach before later settling in Fredericksburg, Virginia. His life was a testament to love, curiosity, and an adventurous spirit.
While living in New Paltz, New York, Mel met Bonnie – the love of his life – while they worked together at Hot Shoppes. Their friendship blossomed into a devoted marriage of nearly 6 decades following their wedding on January 8, 1966. Together, they built a life filled with family, joy, and purpose while raising their two cherished daughters.
Mel dedicated over 30 years to education as the Director of Learning Resources and as head librarian at Mountain Empire Community College in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. His passion for knowledge and learning made a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues throughout his career.
In retirement, Mel and Bonnie loved living the small town beach life in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, where they created many memories with each other, their family and their friends. A man of creativity and generosity, Mel enjoyed reading westerns, alternative history novels, and mysteries; exploring history through books and television; crafting intricate jewelry for loved ones; cooking meals for family and volunteering to cook meals for the homeless and for programs at Coronado United Methodist Church in New Smyrna Beach. He loved traveling with Bonnie to explore and discover the wonders of the world.
Mel is lovingly remembered by his wife Bonnie; daughters Heather Barrons (Bob) and Courtney Ellis (Andy); grandchildren Gabriel Thamm, Alllison Ellis, and Jacob Ellis; sister Margaret Ballard, nieces Liisa DiTarando (Matt) and Stephanie Lane (Mark) and many great-nieces and nephews who held him dear.
A celebration of Mel's remarkable life will take place in New Smyrna Beach. Though he is deeply missed, there is comfort in knowing his loved ones will one day reunite with him in heaven.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hixson United Methodist's youth meal program.
