William Coleman Obituary

COLEMAN, Jr., William R.

It is with heavy hearts that the family of William Robert Coleman, Jr. are sharing the news of his passing on December 11, 2025, in Shelby, North Carolina. Bob, who was 70 years old, was born in Decatur, Georgia on May 29, 1955, and his passing was very sudden and unexpected.

He is survived by his sisters, Tempie Coleman Stepongzi (Mark), of Fredericksburg, VA; and Tamara Coleman Kotrch (Anthony), of Statesville, NC; nephews, Mark Joseph Stepongzi, Jr. (Sommer); Matthew William Stepongzi; grandniece, Rachel Stepongzi; along with other nieces, cousins and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, William R. Coleman, Sr. and Adah Frances Coleman, of Valdese, NC; ex-wife, Susan Hall Coleman, of Wilkesboro, NC; and his niece, Tempie Elizabeth Stepongzi, of Fredericksburg, VA.

Bob went to Hooper Alexander Elementary School and Columbia High School, both in Decatur, GA. In High School he was an active member of the marching and orchestra bands, playing tuba and sousaphone. When his parents were transferred to Texas during his senior year, Bob graduated in 1972 from Robert E. Lee, High School, in Houston, Texas. After graduating, he proudly served in the U.S. Army for 3 years - working with demolition and heavy equipment in Germany; and remained patriotic for his entire life. He enjoyed watching Atlanta Braves baseball, along with college football, especially the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech games. Bob loved when these teams played each other, only UGA was dearest not his heart.

All who knew and loved him can attest to what an endearing, softly spoken Southern gentleman he was to his family, friends, children and pets. Bob made friends wherever he went, being such a gentle bear of a man. He was always ready with a smile or a quiet chuckle; never a complaint, never a word of anger, just a dear brother who will be sorely missed. We welcome all to join us for an informal gathering of love and respect.

A service will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 11:00 AM, in Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Josh Lail, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Wounded Warriors Project or Samaritan's Purse.
