William Guiffre Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by French Funeral Home, Inc. - Gouverneur on Jan. 31, 2026.
Dr. William Andrew Guiffré (November 15, 1934 - January 26, 2026) lived a life defined by devotion, purpose, and an unwavering faith that carried him and everyone around him through every season. He passed away surrounded by the love of the family he cherished, leaving behind a legacy as deep and enduring as the roots he planted over his 91 years.

For 69 years, William shared a remarkable marriage with his beloved wife, Ann. Together they built a family grounded in love, resilience, and faith. Their seven children were the pride of his life: Patty (John), Beth (Stan); Debby (Steve), Billy (Ellen), Amy (Paul), Mary (Bob), Jennifer (Matt), and daughter-in-law Ann Marie. His joy multiplied with each new generation, culminating in 23 grandchildren and 23 greatgrandchildren (with four more expected). William is also survived by his siblings Joe, Tony, David, and Marie, as well as his brother and sisterinlaw, Denny and Peggy Verdow, and numerous nieces and nephews. He leaves a vast family who adored him and will carry his memory forward with warmth and gratitude.

A man of service and conviction, William proudly served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy for three years. His time in the Navy shaped his sense of duty, leadership, and honor-qualities that remained central to who he was throughout his life. It was education though that was both his calling and his gift. William earned his doctorate in education from the University of Rochester, a milestone that reflected his deep commitment to learning and to helping others grow. Over the course of his career, he served as a teacher, guidance counselor, vice principal, and principal at Victor Central High School until his retirement in 1990. He shaped countless young lives with patience, compassion, and a belief in every child's potential. His influence extended far beyond the classroom: he was a steady presence, a trusted mentor, and a man whose quiet wisdom left a lasting imprint. In retirement, William embraced a new creative chapter, writing children's books that reflected his gentle spirit and love of storytelling. His words will continue to inspire young readers, just as he inspired generations of students.

Above all, William was a devoted Catholic with "the faith of a mountain." It guided his decisions, comforted him in hardship, and illuminated his path. His life was a testament to service, humility, and grace.

William's legacy lives on in the family he raised, the students he guided, the stories he wrote, and the countless lives he touched simply by being who he was.

The Guiffré family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Charmaine Sovie for the extraordinary compassion, patience, and dignity she provided to William in his last days. Her steady presence and genuine kindness brought comfort to him and to all of the family during a very difficult time. We are also deeply thankful to Hospice of St. Lawrence County for their guidance, and support. Their dedication made an immeasurable difference, and we will always be grateful.

Please come and celebrate William's life on Saturday, May 16, 2026 at St Anthony's Church in Inlet, NY at 11:00 am. Reception to follow after the mass in the community room at St Anthony's. Burial will take place for family at 6 pm in Old Forge.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Dr. William A. Guiffré Memorial Scholarship. Donations can be payable to the Victor Scholarship Program and mailed to Victor Central High School Scholarship Program, 953 High St, Victor, NY 14564.

May William's memory be a blessing and may the wonderful life he lived continue to shine through all who loved him.
