William Samuel Harper, affectionately known as "Manny" to his immediate family and "Harper" to his friends, departed this life on Monday, December 30th, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 8th, 1954, in Flint, Michigan to the union of Doris Newton (Austin) and Henry Harper.
William is now celebrating in heaven with his grandparents, Harriet and Booker T. Newton; his parents, Doris Newton (Austin) and Henry Harper; his uncles, Leo and Howard Newton; his aunts, Ida Mae and Rose Warren (Ned); his sisters, Dr. Edna Marie Riley (Quintin) and Iris Francine Hollins; and his nephews, Isaiah Omar Austin and Stephen Lamar Austin.
William was the proud father to his five children: Terrell Harmon (Sheena), Ciara Harper-Love, Paris Lamb (Jermaine), Phillip Harper, and Camilya Thomas. He was also the cherished grandfather of nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graduate of Libbey High School, William was a standout athlete known for his dedication and versatility in multiple sports. He was part of the 4x400 relay team with his cousin Reginald Warren, and together they won city, district, regional, and state titles, showcasing his speed and teamwork. In addition to track, William excelled in wrestling, where his strength and determination were unmatched. On the football field, he played as a tight end and gained a reputation for his reliability and skill, catching the ball on every punt return. His achievements in sports reflected his competitive spirit, discipline, and commitment to excellence.
William was a man of many passions, with music being one of his greatest loves. As a young man, he became a dedicated collector of vinyl records, earning recognition for his extensive and meticulously curated collection. His love for music was a thread that connected him to family, friends, and anyone who shared his appreciation for soulful melodies and timeless beats.
A devoted brother to his eight sisters, William took immense pride in being their protector and confidant. His nieces and nephews could always count on "Uncle Manny" for guidance, humor, and unwavering support. Known for his sharp wit and infectious laughter, William was truly the life of every party, bringing joy and laughter wherever he went. He had a zest for life and an uncanny ability to turn ordinary moments into cherished memories.
He leaves to cherish and carry on his legacy: his children, Terrell Harmon (Sheena), Ciara Harper-Love, Paris Lamb (Jermaine), Phillip Harper, and Camilya Thomas; his siblings, Jackie Ferguson, Harriet Harper (Phillip), Patricia Ellis (William), Karen Austin (John), Jenny Boyd (Larry), Velma Austin, and bonus sister Marilyn Fletcher. He also leaves behind his former wife, Pam Harper; cousins who were more like brothers, Ralph and Reginald Warren; lifelong friends Jerry O'Neil and Theopolis "Scutt" McNeal; special friend Marla Reese; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. William shared an unforgettable connection with everyone he encountered, and all whom he loved shared a special relationship with him.
