William Howard "Billy" Ladner passed away peacefully at home on November 18, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on January 15, 1938, in Picayune, Mississippi, Billy's life was marked by a kind-hearted, playful spirit, and an unwavering commitment to his family, who he loved fiercely. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Luana Wadleigh Ladner; his children, Leslie Ladner, Darren Ladner, and Kathy Matherly Ladner; his grandchildren, Justin Kerr, Haley Ladner and Hayden Ladner; and his great-granddaughter, Kylee Juarez. He also is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other cherished family. He was predeceased by his parents, Ida Sybil Talley and Howard Ladner, as well as his brother, Richard Ladner.
Billy's early years were the foundation of a life filled with determination and remarkable achievements. He graduated from Jesuit High School in 1956, where he first showcased his exceptional athletic talents. His love for sports and art led him to Southeastern Louisiana University, where he not only excelled as an athlete but also nurtured his creative side by studying art. In 1961, he was named an All-American in both football and baseball, becoming the only two-sport All-American in Southeastern Lions history. In 2013, at the impressive age of 75, he achieved a lifelong goal by earning a Bachelor of Arts from his beloved Southeastern Louisiana University.
Billy's professional life was characterized by the same level of dedication and success he showed in his athletic pursuits. He retired from State Farm, where he was respected and admired for his work ethic, professionalism and fair-mindedness, and the relationships he built with his colleagues. His athletic legacy was honored when he was inducted into the Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997 and again when he was named Jesuit's 2018 Legend of the Game for football.
Billy's legacy is not only in his achievements but also in the ways he touched the lives of those around him. He was known as a legendary storyteller, master fisherman, prolific gardener, and notorious prankster. He loved painting, attending Southeastern football and baseball games, and spending time with his friends and family. His love of life was infectious, his kindness and warmth touched the hearts of many, and his humor brought laughter to any room. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered as a man who lived life to the fullest, with a kind heart and mischievous smile, and he will live on in the stories he told and the memories of all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with this extraordinary man.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church located at 910 Cross Gates Boulevard, Slidell, Louisiana, beginning at 9:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. followed by a repast in rooms 4, 5, and 6 to the right of the courtyard. My wife and I had the privilege and pleasure of meeting and talking to Billy at tailgating prior to a number of Southeastern football games. What a truly great athlete he was - an All American in both football and baseball - WOW! Billy was always very gracious and nice to talk to. He responded to our questions by sharing many interesting stories about his teammates, coaches and his football experiences back in SLU's golden football years. We will miss seeing Billy at the SLU football games and so will many other loyal fans.

I meant Bill working at State Farm. He had a great sense of humor, always friendly and outgoing, a pleasure to be around. Many of his friends and people he went to college with all told me what an outstanding athlete he was at Southeastern Louisiana College. Every time I talked with him , every other word was "Lou" or his kids, Leslie and Darren. He will be missed, God Bless you Bill.

I worked with Bill for several years at State Farm. We carpooled together to the Westbank office. He was a storyteller, some were true, some were for entertainment. We had some memorable adventures. He was a good friend. He excelled at training his associates and treated everyone with fairness and compassion. I, along with many others, are better as a result of knowing and working with Bill.
