William Lowery Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel - Portsmouth on Jan. 5, 2026.
William "Bill" Cecil Lowery, 79, of Greenland, NH, passed away on December 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 8, 1946, and raised in the South End of Portsmouth, NH, Bill was a loving, loyal family man-a strong, steady presence whose compassion and selflessness supported and protected everyone he knew, and the rights and dignity of all. He was always the first to step up and help others in any way that was needed without expecting anything in return.
Upon graduating from Portsmouth High School, Bill joined the Navy and as a proud US veteran he belonged to the Greenland Veteran's Association. Using his GI Bill, he earned an associate's degree in business from Great Bay Community College while working full-time. Bill retired from Public Service Company of New Hampshire in 2009 after more than 30 years of dedication to the company and those he mentored.
He was an honored founder of the Exeter Seahawks Football Organization, coaching from 1976 - 1985 and then rejoining the organization as a coach from 2007 – 2017. He received the Exeter Seahawks Football Lifetime Service Award for his initiative, leadership, values, and dedication-as founder and coach. He coached youth hockey in Portsmouth and Little League baseball in Greenland, leading both teams to area championships in 1981 & 1982. For his family, he built their home with the help of a good friend, an enduring testament to his grit, craftsmanship, and devotion.
Bill is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan (Webb) Lowery; his son, Mike Lowery and his wife Laura of Stratham, NH; daughters, Shelly Golden and her husband Steve of Thornton, NH and Diane Vermeersch and her husband Andrew of Thornton; sister, Janice Hamilton; and six grandchildren, Brayden, Kylan, Will, Cali, Georgia and Nina. He will be deeply missed by his family, extended family, many friends, and the community he loved. He was truly one of a kind.
In time, William's family will post information regarding a Celebration of Life event. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the American Diabetes Association.
