William MacWhorter Obituary
William Edward MacWhorter, 96, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away on November 7, 2023, surrounded by his beloved family. He was born on January 9, 1927, in Mt. Dora, Florida to the late Olive Jane MacWhorter and William Edward MacWhorter. He married the love of his life, Cynthia Ann (Crostreet) MacWhorter, on May 26, 1979.
William lived in New York City until 1945, when he served with distinction in the United States Army. He discovered his true career path when he became an administrator in higher education at Bloomfield College, Bloomfield, New Jersey, his own alma mater. As Vice President for Business, his personal demeanor of quiet resolve, coupled with his understanding and compassion for individuals of diverse talents and backgrounds made him the perfect fit for administration at the college and University level. He was a man of extraordinary integrity and faith whose insight into human nature allowed him to be respected and loved as he made decisions based on these principles. He subsequently served as Vice President at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana and as Director of Building Services at the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana.
His other talent lay in the sky. As a private pilot, he soared above many as he brought his calm and deliberate approach to problem solving in the complex field of aviation. Bill and Cynthia spent countless wonderful hours exploring their world from the air, relishing the freedom and glory of flying.
Bill was generous with his time and talents and hugs. His warmth and gentle manner revealed a man who was devoted to giving of himself to anyone who needed him and who might just want to share a story or two. Closest to his heart was his family. He is survived by his wife Cynthia, his daughter Lee A. Wineland (Richard), his son Dr. Glenn Edward MacWhorter (Stephanie), his granddaughter Morgan Tudball (Kevin), his grandsons Miles Armstrong (Kat), Forest Armstrong, Nathan Armstrong (Keisha), Devon Bryson Armstrong-Wineland, Alex MacWhorter (Savannah), and great-grandson Otto Sage MacWhorter.
The family will gather at a later date for a Memorial Service and Interment at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Memorial contributions may be made in Bill's name to the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana and to Southern Care Hospice.
