Hagerstown, MD – William James Madden, Sr., 99, of Hagerstown, MD passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Meritus Medical Center Hagerstown, MD.

He was born on August 31, 1926, in Shaner, PA to the late James and Laura M. (Mays) Madden.

William was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

He was employed by Mack Trucks, Inc. for 26 years until his retirement in 1988. He also served for 25 years as a volunteer with Hospice of Washington County. After retirement, he was employed by Turning Point as a handyman.

William was talented at construction and refinishing furniture. He created many lovely pieces for his home, and for family and friends.

He was a member of Virginia Avenue Church of God, he held multiple positions within the church to include Superintendent, Teacher, and Deacon. He was a man of great faith. His favorite thing to do was to read and study the Bible.

William was an avid reader of many different genres. He stayed actively apprised of world politics. He enjoyed the outdoors tending to his flowers, shrubs, and vegetable garden.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn May (Perine) Madden whom he married in January 1948; children Mariam Robins (Jesse) of Maryland, William J. Madden, Jr. of California, Wanda M. Taylor of Texas, Ronald Rex Madden of Florida, and Richard Wayne Madden of Maryland; 5 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by her sister Marian Madden King.

Graveside services will be held at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park Hagerstown, MD on Friday, March 13, 2026, at 2:00 pm with Pastor Shawn Bushman officiating.
