William Michael "Mike" Maddox, 71, of Canton, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at Maggie Valley Rehabilitation Center.
Mike was born on February 19, 1954, in Nashville, Tennessee, to the late Bradford Lee Maddox and Mary Frances (Anderson) Maddox. He spent most of his life in Nashville before moving to the mountains of Western North Carolina later in life.
A proud patriot, Mike served his country as a Vietnam Veteran in the U.S. Navy. After his military service, he established a career as a skilled carpenter, lending his talents to the construction industry. He also enjoyed tinkering and worked as an auto mechanic for a time. Mike was known for his generous spirit, always willing to lend a helping hand or offer his skills to anyone in need.
Mike's greatest joy in life was his family. He treasured every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a master of the "dad jokes," famous for his witty comments and ability to lift the spirits of anyone who was feeling down. Mike often ended his calls and visits with, "I love you more". A simple man with simple pleasures, Mike was a lover of Hershey chocolate and a good hamburger. His laughter and comforting presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Mike was preceded in death by his great love and wife, Susan Kelley, and his daughter, Jenny Pierce (Bondy). He was also predeceased by his siblings: Robert Maddox, Anne E. Maddox, Fred Maddox, John Maddox, Linda Maddox, Terry Maddox, and Ricky Maddox.
He is survived by his loving children, his daughter Michele Rathbone (Michael) of Canton, NC; his son John Maddox (Hope) of Arden, NC; and stepdaughter April Kelley of Rutherfordton, NC. He is also survived by his siblings, Ellen Golden(Maddox), Roger Maddox (Roxanne), and Carolyn Dixon (Maddox), all of Nashville, TN. Mike leaves behind nine beloved grandchildren, eleven cherished great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held by his family at a later date.
