William Mohan

Dr. William Mohan, 81, passed away peacefully on December 23. Born on May 11, 1944, in Lynn, Massachusetts, Will lived a life marked by deep faith, intellectual curiosity, and unwavering devotion to family, students, and community. His early academic journey began at La Salle University, followed by his studies with the Franciscans, and three formative years in the seminary in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. He continued his education at Georgetown University, completed his graduate work at Villanova University, and ultimately earned his doctorate from SUNY Binghamton.

Will devoted more than four decades to Marywood University, where he served as a beloved Professor of Philosophy for over 40 years. A gifted teacher and mentor, his academic focus centered on Medical Ethics and Political Philosophy, fields in which he inspired generations of students to think critically and live thoughtfully. In addition to his teaching, he was a respected author, writing From a Memory and co-authoring two additional works, contributing meaningfully to philosophical scholarship.

Beyond academia, Will embraced life with enthusiasm and warmth. He was a devoted father who coached his sons’ sports teams, especially baseball, and remained a lifelong sports enthusiast, spending many years attending spring training in Florida. An avid tennis player, he also found daily joy in long walks at Lackawanna State Park. Summers were often spent in Sea Isle City, New Jersey, where the family built enduring friendships and cherished memories. Will had a deep appreciation for music and was a passionate Scrabble enthusiast, always eager for a challenging game.

He was predeceased by his parents John and Ann (McManus) Mohan, his brother, John; his wife, Sheila (Sweeney) Mohan; and his beloved sons, William and Timothy.

He is survived by his loving wife, June, of 57 years, his devoted partner and closest friend who never left his side; his daughters-in-law, Sinead Devlin-Mohan and Kara Mohan; several cherished nieces and nephews; and two very special grandchildren, Ceire and Patrick Devlin-Mohan, who brought him immense pride and joy and most recently he was blessed to welcome his great grandson Tadhg Declan Devlin-Mohan.

A service celebrating Will’s life will be held on Monday, December 29, at 12:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Church, 301 S. State Street, Clarks Summit, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Allied Services Home Hospice for their compassionate and devoted care during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in William’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Shriners Hospital of Philadelphia.
