He believed in the importance of education and the power of storytelling, always encouraging his students to engage with the past.
Outside of the classroom, Nicky had a penchant for humor, loving to tell jokes that brought joy to everyone around him. He enjoyed relaxing with sitcom reruns, especially the timeless charm of Andy Griffith. A sports enthusiast and a fan of professional wrestling, his interests were as diverse as his personality.
Nicky was a beloved brother and son. He is survived by his brothers; Lee Coats of Goldsboro, Matt Coats, and Bennett Coats, along with his wife, Terri Lynn, of Benson. He also leaves behind his aunt, Janet Matthews of Benson, and several cousins who will carry on his memory.
