Obituary
William Henry Pillow "Bill" was born on October 17, 1941, at Hubbard Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, to the late William A. and Ophelia G. Pillow. A man of quiet strength, unwavering integrity, and deep love for family and community, Bill peacefully departed this life on June 16, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, scholarship, music, and faith.
Bill was raised in Columbia, Tennessee, and graduated from Carver-Smith High School in 1959. He went on to attend Morehouse College in
Atlanta, Georgia, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964. He further pursued graduate studies at Atlanta University, completing a Master of Arts in Political Science in 1966. Bill continued lifelong learning through further coursework at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Hartford.
While in college, Bill met the love of his life, Patricia Dixon, during an economics class at Spelman College, where he served as the student assistant to his Morehouse economics professor. After dating, they married in 1966-the same year Bill joined the U.S. Army, serving in Bamberg, Germany until 1968 and rising to the rank of Sergeant. After earning her master's from Howard University, Pat joined Bill in Germany for the final six months of his military service-marking the start of their lifelong journey rooted in love and family.
Following his military service, Bill embarked on a distinguished 30-year career with Travelers Insurance Company (now Citigroup) from 1968 to 1998. He later brought his extensive experience to Prince Street Technology, and the U.S. Census Bureau. He concluded his distinguished insurance career at the Joe Marshall Agency of State Farm Insurance, bringing with him deep expertise and insight. Over his ten years there, he earned a reputation as a valued professional, a loyal colleague, and a beloved friend.
Bill was a proud and committed member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., initiated through the Eta Omega Chapter in 1965. His contributions included serving as the chapter's 10th Basileus and as the inaugural president of its nonprofit organization. His friendship, leadership, and mentorship were felt deeply throughout the fraternity community.
A man of deep faith, Bill was a devoted member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He gave generously of his time and talents as a Vestry member, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, and active participant in the Men's Club, Brotherhood of St. Andrew, and both the Men's and Main Choirs. He worked closely with then-new priest Father Robert Wright, who would later become the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta. Their shared service became one of Bill's most meaningful and cherished experiences-both within the church and in his personal life.
Music was one of Bill's greatest joys. A gifted bass, he sang with passion in the St. Paul's Choirs and later as a charter member of the acclaimed Trey Clegg Singers, where his rich voice helped lift spirits and bring people together. Throughout his time with the Trey Clegg Singers, Bill relished the chance to perform a rich variety of musical genres that resonated deeply with wide audiences. In the process, he also formed a lasting and meaningful friendship with Trey.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia; his sons, William Christopher (Lisa) and Michael Scott Dixon; cherished granddaughters Kyndall Alexys and Korie Kristina Pillow; sister-in-law Janet Bell; cousins Dolores Strawbridge; Dr. Tiffany Lee (Mark); Dr. William Greenfield (Tiffany); nephews Ronald Pillow (Jaminthia); James P.D. Wilson (Lenise); niece Raiquetta Bell; Janae Wilson; godson Jonathan Marshall; and a host of loving extended family and lifelong friends.
A man of humility, quiet leadership, and enduring faith, Bill's life was a testament to service, excellence, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the blessing of knowing him.
