Dr William G Ramey

William G. Ramey, 75, of Tenafly, NJ, passed away on November 2, 2025. He was born on March 2, 1950, in Durham, NC, to Robert and Beatrix Ramey.
Early Life & Education
William, known to family and friends as Bill, grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia. He graduated with a B.A. with distinction from the University of Virginia and went on to earn his M.D. from the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
Career & Accomplishments
Bill completed a research fellowship in renal transplantation. He was a resident at St. Luke's Hospital Center and later served as Chief Resident in Surgery at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital. He became a Senior Attending in Surgery, performing both general surgery and renal transplantation.
He went on to serve as Associate Director of the Department of Surgery, Director of the Transplantation Service, and Director of the Jane Forbes Clark Surgical Research Laboratories. He also led the Basic Science for Surgery course.
Bill was an Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at Columbia University. He served on the Board of Directors for both the New York Organ Donor Network and the United Network for Organ Sharing, and authored numerous academic publications throughout his career. His work reflected a lifelong dedication to healing, teaching, and service to others.
Personal Life
Bill was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, Maxine, for 47 years. He deeply loved his two children, Eric and Craig, and cherished every moment spent with their families.
He had a passionate, curious spirit and a creative mind. He loved singing opera, painting, skiing, sailing, woodworking, model making, and lapidary work. Whether building something in his workshop or rehearsing for a performance, he approached life with enthusiasm, craftsmanship, and joy.
Family
Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Maxine Rinsky Ramey; his son Eric, his wife Samantha, and their daughter Davina; and his son Craig, his wife Natalie, and their son Magnus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Beatrix Ramey, and his brother, Thomas Ramey.
Services
A memorial service will be held on November 7, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at Barrett Leber Funeral Home, in Tenafly NJ. Refreshments are to follow at 156 E Clinton Ave, Tenafly NJ.
