William Ramp Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Smith & Sons Funeral Home - Columbia City on Feb. 5, 2026.
William Eugene Ramp, 87, of Columbia City, passed away at 6:23 a.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at Miller's Oak Pointe, Columbia City.

Born on September 22, 1938, in Whitley County, Indiana, he was the youngest of eight children born to Ira and Eva Ramp. He grew up in Columbia Twp., and graduated from Columbia City High School in 1957.

Working a variety of jobs, he primarily worked for Dana Corporation in Fort Wayne. During a layoff from Dana, he took a job with Ford Machinery in California for two years. Returning to Dana, he completed his work career in 2004 with 30 years of service.

Bill had a great love for Columbia City and enjoyed telling stories about his childhood and teenage adventures. He had a contagious laugh and regularly joined his friends at Denny's or Hall's in Fort Wayne for conversation and to voice his strong political opinions. On hot summer nights, he enjoyed car rides on the rural farm roads.

Bill was raised with strong ties to the Baptist Church and often told Bible stories. More recently, he was drawn to the Columbia City Church of Christ, where he developed a close relationship with Pastor Jack Heirholzer and his wife Joyce. The family thanks Jack and Joyce for looking after Bill with such warmth and care.

Bill fought deteriorating heart disease for many years. As requested by him, there was an immediate burial at the Nolt Cemetery. A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday (February 21st) from noon until 3 p.m. at the Columbia City Church of Christ, 270 Frontage Road. Arrangements are by Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

I was very fortunate to have gotten to know Bill when we worked at Strouses Men's Wear in CC. He was just a really great guy. Am sorry to hear of his passing but will always remember his laugh.
