William Henry Roberts, born on May 16, 1932, in Conway, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025, in Chesapeake, Virginia, at the age of 93. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who dedicated his life to his family and his country.
William spent his early years working diligently on his family's tobacco farm in South Carolina, instilling in him a strong work ethic that he carried throughout his life. In pursuit of broader horizons, he joined the United States Navy, where he proudly served for 20 years as a cook. During his tenure, he took great pride in crafting weekly meal plans and providing hearty meals for those aboard his destroyer. His service included time during the Vietnam War, an experience he held in deep regard.
After being stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, William met the love of his life, Joyce Anne, with whom he shared an instant connection. They were married in South Carolina on July 22, 1953, and enjoyed 72 years of devoted companionship. Together, they made their home in the Hampton Roads area, where they raised their family and built a lifetime of cherished memories.
William's interests were as diverse as they were heartfelt. He found joy in cruising with Joyce, gambling trips to Las Vegas with family, and peaceful days spent fishing. A passionate gardener, he delighted in sharing the fruits of his labor with loved ones. He was also known for his culinary prowess, particularly his secret pumpkin pie and pound cakes, recipes he never divulged. A Redskins fan through and through, he enjoyed watching wrestling and spending quiet moments in his garden.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mose Chancelor and Rose Marie Roberts. He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Anne, and their children: Robert (Patricia) Roberts, Richard Roberts, Ronnie (Patricia A.) Roberts, Rebecca (Carl) Morrison, and Rhonda (Rufus) Stone. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his legacy of love and dedication.
William's children hold dear the many memories of their time together, from fishing and camping adventures to football games and cooking lessons. His presence was a constant source of strength and guidance, leaving an indelible mark on those who knew him.
William Henry Roberts will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his family, his proud service in the Navy, and the quiet but profound impact he had on the lives of those around him. He will be dearly missed and forever cherished.
