The Heavens opened and accepted the promotion to glory of a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, mentor, and teacher, Barbara Evon Couch, on Friday, November 7th, 2025. This spirited woman was born on January 6, 1945, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Mary Rose Blowe Couch and Burman Couch. Siblings preceding her to glory are Marilyn Baskin, Burman Couch, Donald Couch, Delores Couch, and Juanita Bruce.
Barbara was a seamstress by vocation, graduating from Fashion Industries High School, where she served as class president during her senior year. She proceeded to open her own seamstress business, Barbara's Designs, where she created hundreds of outfits for her devoted customer base and family members. Her love language was sewing and creating clothes for her two daughters, Kimberlee Pierre and Kaianne Vanterpool (affectionately known as Kim & Kai). She always ensured they were the best-dressed children on the planet.
Barbara attended Long Island University but left to pursue an employment opportunity at the New York Post Office. She eventually left that position to assume a role in the early days of computing as a data punch administrator. She left that role to work at Frederick Atkins, a prominent retail buying and consulting firm, where she ensured that each of her nieces secured summer employment there. Barbara also resided in Staunton, Virginia, Raleigh, North Carolina, Petersburg, Virginia, Seabrook, Maryland, and
Virginia Beach, Virginia. You would always be able to find Barbara at her sewing machine, eating Mike & Ike's, sunflower seeds, chips, and drinking those Pepsis.
Throughout her lifetime, Barbara always remained spiritually rooted in good soil. She was a member of Berean Baptist Church and Wayside Baptist Church, both located in Brooklyn, New York. At Wayside, she managed the Wayside Manor and Banquet Hall, where she ensured Christ was represented in all undertakings facilitated by the Manor. Her last spiritual earthly home was The Way, The Truth and the Life Church, where she led a significant number of her family to join the church. She often indicated her church membership sustained her during her challenging health conditions. For their love and unwavering faithfulness to our mother, we will forever be grateful.
We understand life and death are in the power of God's hands. On Friday, November 7th, 2025, God called Barbara to her eternal rest. We all know she fought the fight of fights and now rests safely in God's arms with her mother, Mary Rose Couch, father Burman Couch and other family members. She left a treasure trove of memories we will remember for a lifetime.
Barbara is survived by her children, Kimberlee B. Pierre (Nigel) and Kaianne J. Vanterpool, (Christopher) and her sister Elaine Hinds. Granddaughters: Nia I. Pierre and LeJana E. Peterson. Her nieces: Kamala Wilson (Wilfred), Gilleyan J. Hargrove (Eric) and Afrika J. Hinds. Her nephews: John Burgess, Greyling Bruce (Keisha) and Chad R. Hinds. Great nieces: Brianne A. Hargrove, Constance Patterson, Ashley Bruce, Trinity Patterson; Great-nephews Devin H. Rodriguez, Steven A. Rodriguez, Khalil Battle, Tyler R. Hargrove and Kyree Wilson, Jaden Bruce, Jamere Patterson; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be held on November 22, 2025 at 10 AM at The Way, the Truth and the Life Church located at 4608 Deep Creek Blvd, Portsmouth, VA 23702 by Rev. John T. Blackwell II, Pastor
