William Lawrence Roemer, 76, of Port Penn De passed away peacefully on December 31, 2024, after a life of strength, love of family and dedication to his community.
William was born on March 24, 1948, the son of late Joseph and Mary Roemer.
William left school early to support his family. He had a true love of cars and started his automotive career working at a local Getty Station. This marked the beginning of a lifelong career in the automotive industry, culminating in his joining General Motors in 1968. At GM his strong work ethic, attention to detail and leadership skills led to roles in forklift training and team building. William developed the forklift safety training program and trained team members to prepare for their forklift operator certification. He represented GM in Detroit and New Orleans, appreciating the opportunities for professional development. William furthered his education by obtaining his GED and pursuing additional coursework.
William met the love of his life, Louise Poore in their teenager years and they were married in February 1966. They established their forever home in Port Penn and raised their family. A dedicated husband, father, Pop, and community member. William served in the Port Penn Volunteer Fire Company, acting as Chief in 1977. He was President of the Port Penn Civic Association, an active member of the Presbyterian Church, and a member of the UAW Local 435. He retired from GM after 37 years, but continued his work in automotive repair at his "Broken Rod Garage". His love of cars began with a 1955 Chevy Bel Air, the first of many classic cars he would acquire. This passion fueled his early enjoyment of drag racing his cars at Cecil County Dragway, attending the annual NHRA Summer Nationals in Englishtown, NJ and many NHRA events at Maple Grove Raceway. William also enjoyed motorcycles and riding his Harley Davidson, especially to Conowingo Dam and up thru the countryside to Lancaster.
Above all William loved his family deeply. He cherished time spent with family, playing cornhole, engaging in conversation and being outdoors. He enjoyed his wife's cooking and baking and was an avid Philadelphia Eagle's and Phillies fan. William will also be missed by his beloved cat Sammy.
William is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Louise, two children: Maureen Ludlam (Daren) of Smyrna, DE, and William Roemer (Venus) of Millsboro, DE. Siblings: Frances Wilkinson, Stanton, DE, Sam Roemer (Carol) Newark, DE., Judy Anderson of Fairbanks, AK, and Mary Grant of Hanover, MD. Grandchildren: Taylor Ludlam, Morgan Scully (James), Cierra Roemer, Tristen Roemer and Alexis Spencer. Great granddaughter: Layla Scully along with loved niece and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Monday evening January 6th, from 5-7 pm at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St.,
Middletown, DE 19709. There will be a second visitation held prior to the the funeral service on Tuesday morning, January 7th at 10am at the funeral home. The service will begin at 11am with interment to follow in Old Drawyers Cemetery.
