William Scheu

William Scheu, 97, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 10:50 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2025, in the Raclin House. William was born on April 4, 1927, in South Bend, Indiana, to August L. and Rose (Andert) Scheu.
William was first and foremost a devoted husband to his wife of 76 years Lorraine M. Wisniewski, who survives. They were married on September 18, 1948, in Holy Cross Church. William was a wonderful father to his six children: Craig (Susan) Scheu of Granger, Indiana, Tim (Deborah) Scheu of Lawton, Michigan, William (Marilyn) Scheu of Fairborn, Ohio, Susan (Michael) Forrest of Brentwood, California, Janet Swain of Granger, Indiana, and Karen (John) Arndt of South Bend, Indiana; a dedicated and loving grandfather to his grandchildren: Gabriel, Loren, McKean, and Bailey Scheu; Jeanne (Daylond) Hooper, Christopher Scheu, and Carly (Matt) Porter; Sarah (Jason) Collins and Meredith (Michael) Kiley; Joe (Elizabeth) Swain, Madeline Swain, Abby (Rick) Lacy, and Tess (Ryan) Watt; and Elizabeth and Jacob Arndt; and a doting great-grandfather to his great-grandchildren: Alex (Mary) and Bradley Hooper; Alice Porter; Emma and Addison Collins; Logan, Ethan, and Claire Kiley; Noah, Benjamin, and Ellie Swain; and Ella Lacy.
After graduating from Riley High School in 1945, William served in the United States Navy during both W.W. II and the Korean War. He retired in 1969 from the South Bend Fire Department, where he was employed as a firefighter for 20 years. He then worked for Midwest Lite Company for 18 years and worked from 1977 until 1989 at School City in the Maintenance Department. In his retirement, he could often be found in the cheap seats of his grandchildren's sporting events, cheering from the outfield or sidelines. He was skilled at scroll work and, though he would never admit it, was a great card player and everyone's first choice for a euchre partner. He was his family and friend's first call for advice on how to fix things and was a steady presence in the chaos of a large, growing family.
William was preceded in death by his grandson, Matthew Arndt, and his great-grandson, Gabriel Swain.
William was a member of St. Therese Little Flower Church. He was a member of the American Legion Pulaski Post #357 and the D.A.V.
To honor William's wishes, there will be no visitation or services. Memorial Contributions should be directed to the Hospice Foundation. Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
