William Norman Schultz JR

October 19, 1934 - December 13, 2025

William Norman Schultz JR, well-known Niskayuna School District educator and long-term resident of Glenville, passed away at home Saturday, December 13, at the age of 91.

Mr. Schultz is survived by his loving wife Judith (Burns) Schultz, his two daughters, Stephanie, of Columbia, Maryland, and Christine, of Colonie, New York, as well as his niece Peggy (Schultz) Robinson, of Georgia and her children Lilah, Connor, and James. His parents, both teachers, William Norman Schultz SR and Amy King, and a brother, Peter, pre-deceased him.

Born in Portland, Maine, William was an alumnus of Farmington Maine Teacher's College and Union College. He married his college sweetheart, Miss Judith Marion Burns, "Judy," in Rockland, Maine, August 21, 1957. After graduation, both taught school in Limestone, Maine, where William was asked to lead the Teacher's Association, the start of a lifetime committement to educational leadership. William then earned his Master's in Education, graduating from Union College in Schenectady, NY. He soon accepted a position as a Biology Teacher for the Niskayuna CSD and the family moved to nearby Glenville.

At Niskayuna, William, "Bill," served more than one term as President of the Niskayuna Teacher's Association and was part of a core group of innovative teachers who introduced team-teaching. A teacher of middle school science, his room never lacked for interesting animals and specimens. He was the leader of the chess club and led the photography and yearbook club, working with students to painstakingly develop each photograph by hand.

After retirement, Bill served as President of New York State United Teachers Retiree Council 12, and Consultant for Retiree Council 10, 12 and 13. He was a member of the American Federation of Teachers, the Alliance for Retired Americans, and many other associations.

A bit of a Renaissance Man, Bill enjoyed a wide variety of activities, including reading, watching the birds and critters in his backyard, dining with friends, chess, playing guitar, computers, using his iPad, golf, basketball, water-skiing, photography, and spending time with his beloved black poodles Rascal, Skipper, and Joshua. He was a great lover of boating and a life member of the Awenke Yacht Club, where he served as Commodore and where he, Judy, and the dogs, enjoyed much of their well-earned retirement.

Bill took great delight in learning about his lineage that reached back to the earliest settlers of Quebec, and to the Mayflower on his mother's side as a descendant of Myles Standish and other passengers. On his father's side, his third great-grandfather Peter Schultz was a Dutchess County Militia Lieutenant - one of eight Revolutionary War patriot sons of Christian and Christiana Schultz, early settlers of Rhinebeck. He was a member of both the Mayflower Society and the Sons of the American Revolution.

Interment will be in Maine. At this time, the family is caring for Bill's much-beloved wife Judy, who is in fragile health at Ellis Hospital. For this reason, visiting hours will be postponed until spring. For those who wish to express condolences, please do reach out to Judy. She very much enjoys hearing from you. Mr Schultz was one of the best teachers that I ever had. He was loved by his students and we will never forget his wintergreen mints. He helped us with our science projects and encouraged us to enter the Science Fairs (I won first place) and so did my sister for her class.
Limestone Jr High was better because he taught there.
