William Thorpe Obituary William Henry Thorpe, known to friends and family as Bill, passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 25, 2025, in Wallingford, Pennsylvania. Born on December 14, 1931, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bill's life was one marked by dedication, faith, and a boundless love for his family and community.
Bill's formative years were spent in Bywood where he forged friendships that would last his entire life. His thirst for knowledge and commitment to service were evident from an early age. An alumnus of Penn State University, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts in 1953. Following graduation, from 1953 to 1955, Bill proudly served in the United States Army, where he displayed the same loyalty and integrity that would become the hallmark of his personal and professional life.
Upon returning from service, he spent two years studying Law at Temple University and his life path soon led him to the love of his life, Sylvia Sue Pomeroy. The couple married in 1957 and together embarked on a journey filled with love, partnership, and adventure. Their family soon grew to 4 childrenDebra, William, David, and Linda.
Bill's professional life was as diverse as it was successful. He began as an insurance salesman at Travelers Insurance and soon thereafter became a partner in Taylor & Anderson Towing and Lighterage Company, where his leadership and vision were instrumental in the company's growth. His entrepreneurial spirit also led him to become the president of Blue Line Hockey Inc., an owner in the Westtown Sports Center, and the president of the Seapoint Association in Brigantine, New Jersey where he owned a summer home.
Bill's commitment to his community was further exemplified by his role as an elder at Bethany Evangelical Presbyterian Church. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him in his actions and providing comfort and inspiration to those around him. Bill's life was one lived in service to others, and his generous spirit was felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A gifted athlete, Bill's love for sports was a constant throughout his life. He enjoyed playing baseball, basketball, and tennis, and was known to spend his downtime watching Penn State games, the Flyers, the Eagles, the Phillieshis TV always had "the game on," which meant any game or match as long as it was sports. Bill's talents extended beyond the sports field; he had a great singing voice and was proficient with the guitar, ukulele, and harmonica. His musical performances, particularly those at bedtime for his children, are cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of his family.
Bill's greatest pride and joy, however, was found in his large family of 4 children, 8 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. He attended countless swim meets, baseball games, shows, graduations, and his door was always open to visitors who were welcomed for a hot meal and conversation. It was a rare occasion for Bill and Sue to not have family coming or going! He was the go-to for many when it came to advice or an extra dollar or two.
William Henry Thorpe's life was a testament to the power of love, the strength of faith, and the importance of community. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, compassion, and a belief in the goodness of people. As we reflect on his life, we are reminded of the impact one individual can have and the difference one can make through a life lived with intention and grace.
Bill was predeceased by his father Harry Clay Thorpe, his mother Jessie Taylor Thorpe, and his brother Robert Thorpe. Bill is survived by his wife, Sylvia Sue Thorpe, brother Richard J. Thorpe, children Debra (Nels) Clemetsen, William (Kim) Thorpe, David (Holly) Thorpe, and Linda (Chris) Varga; grandchildren Corinne (Stephen) Logan, Jordan Varga, Jessica Thorpe, Benjamin Thorpe, Casey Clemetsen, Cameron Thorpe, Jennifer Thorpe, and Joshua Thorpe; great grandchildren Kaylen, Connor and Emma Logan; and many more family and friends.
