William Allen "Bill" Townsend, age 84, of Quincy, died on Sunday, December 12, 2021, at 7:01 am in Blessing Hospital.
Bill was born October 30, 1937 in Pocahontas, Illinois, the son of William James and Elva Barbara Townsend. He married Mary Richmond on October 28, 2000 in Quincy, Illinois. She survives.
Bill attended Caseyville High School and Gem City College. He served in the Navy for four years during the Korean War. He was employed at the ship yards in St. Louis, McDonald Douglas, and later worked for Zales repairing watches for several years. He was the jewelry department manager at Bergner's for 16 years, and also worked at the Illinois Veterans Home, before he retired. Bill owned and operated Mr. Bill's DJ service for many years.
Bill was a member of Parkview Church. He belonged to the Triple Oaks Club, American Legion Post 37 where he served on the Honor Guard for many years and also served as chairman of the baseball team. Bill enjoyed fishing and his time as a coach for girls softball. He and Mary enjoyed driving and participating in vintage car shows.
Survivors in addition to his wife, Mary, include two sons, Keith Townsend and Kevin (Carla) Townsend, both of O'Fallon, MO; three grandchildren, Alexa, Preston and Parker Townsend; four step-children; 11 step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; five nieces and nephews, who he treated like his children, Mark Tate, Bob (Kathy) Tate, Melanie (Dena) Tate, Dana (Chris McPeake) Wilson, and Missy Bay; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Carolyn Holms, and two nephews, Jim Townsend and Tim Tate.
Services: 6:00 pm on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, with Rev. Shane Tomko officiating. Bill's family asks that you please wear a mask if you plan to attend the service.
Inurnment: 10:30 am on Thrusday, December 16, 2021 at Sunset Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 37 Honor Guard and the United States Navy Military Honors detail.
Visitation: 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home. Bill's family asks that you please wear a mask if you plan to attend the visitation.
