Willie Mitchell was born to a loving family of eight to the late Joe and Daisy Mitchell on March 15,1950 in Spartanburg, SC. His parents were members of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Whitestone, SC where he received Christ and Baptism. He Transitioned from this earthly life to his eternal resting place on July 6, 2025, at home.
He received his high school diploma at Benjamin E. Mayes School in Pacolet, SC. He participated in several sports in which basketball was his favorite. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marines. After serving several years in the Marines, he re-enlisted in the United States Army for duties as a culinary specialist which was his passion. During his military career he received several awards and decorations and was awarded an honorable discharge for 20 years of distinguished military service. Upon retirement from the Army, His passion for cooking led him to a career in preparing food at hotel establishments as a chef. Because of health, his career ended at Hard Rock Hotel, Daytona Beach, Fl where he enjoyed his work and made many friends.
He loved Jesus with all his heart, and he loved serving him. His demeanor touched every person he met, always encouraging, always smiling. His presence on the Praise Team touched us all at Cross Creek Community Church, and we are all still deeply saddened by his passing, but he is with Jesus now, singing and praising God with great gusto.
His work with the homeless was amazing. He helped plan and cook meals for 100 to 150 people (more during Covid) every month as part of the Community Hot Meals Program in New Smyrna Beach FL.
He also loved bowling every week at Back Alley Bowling with a few friends, and even that was a ministry as he befriended Staff and fellow bowlers. His neighborhood became a place for his style of ministry as he walked its streets (3 miles each day) getting to know and encourage his neighbors who came to love him as much as we have.
We are, and will continue missing him, but we know we will see him again someday when we're all together with Jesus!
