Wladyslaw Czerniewsk, 100, of Wallingford, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2025, surrounded by the family he so deeply loved. For 60 beautiful years, he was the devoted husband of Leokadia Waszkiewicz Czerniewski, and their enduring partnership was a testament to love, strength, and shared joy.
Born in Daugavpils, Latvia, Wladyslaw was the beloved son of the late Piotr and Stephanie (Gegun) Czerniewski. A survivor of the unimaginable horrors of World War II, he emerged with a heart full of compassion and a soul defined by resilience. Wladyslaw lived each day with quiet humility, unwavering kindness, and a gentle strength that left an imprint on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He built a proud life in Wallingford, where he worked for 35 years at Allegheny Ludlum Corporation as a steelworker. His tireless work ethic and dedication helped shape a better future for his family and his community. But beyond his profession, Wladyslaw was a gifted carpenter and handyman, always ready to lend his hands and heart to anyone in need.
Wladyslaw found joy in life's simple pleasures-tending to his garden, solving puzzles, vacations with friends and trying his luck at the casino. He had a curious and vibrant mind, and spoke five languages: English, Polish, Latvian, German, and Russian. His passion for learning and love for connecting with people transcended borders and generations.
He especially cherished his time in Florida, where he found peace and sunshine, and more moments to share with those he loved most.
In addition to his loving wife Leokadia, Wladyslaw leaves behind a cherished legacy through his children: Peter Czerniewski and his wife Rachel; Marie Zakrzewski and her husband Robert; Elizabeth Zakrzewski and her husband Alan; Anna Grabinski and her husband Joseph; Paula Robins and her husband Matthew; and Stephanie Buglione and her husband James. He was the proud grandfather of Jacob and Luke Czerniewski; Nicholas and Alexander Zakrzewski; Kristen, Jeffrey, and Daniel Zakrzewski; Michael, Christopher, and Catherine Shea; Leela and Emma Robins; and Walker, Kennedy, and Regan Buglione. His great-grandchildren, Walter Shea and Arianna Pender, brought him immense joy in his later years.
He was predeceased by his brothers Mieczyslaw Czerniewski of Wallingford, CT, and Edward Czerniewski of Latvia, and is survived by his brother Piotr Czerniewski and sisters Veronika Tisco and Jadviga Kapustinska, all of Latvia. His sister, Anna Matveka of Latvia, also preceded him in death.
Above all, Wladyslaw will be remembered for the love he gave freely, the kindness he showed effortlessly, and the strength with which he lived his extraordinary life.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Wladyslaw's life at The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext., on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. His funeral cortege will then proceed to Saints Peter and Paul Church, Saint Faustina Parish, 127 N. Orchard St., Wallingford, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Wallingford.
In lieu of gifts, donations can be made to SS. Peter and Paul Church also know as SS. Faustina Parish of Wallingford.
