Wyman G. Prater

Wyman Glen Prater, 78, of Canadian stepped into his heavenly home on January 4, 2024, in Canadian.

 

Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Canadian with Rev. Matt Phenix officiating. Burial will follow at Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.

 

Wyman Glen Prater was born April 1, 1945, in Chickasha, OK to L.A. and Ethel Prater. He often said he wasn’t born in Texas, but he got here as fast as he could. Wyman grew up on his beloved family farm south of Canadian. He attended Canadian schools and graduated with the class of 1963. Following graduation, he attended West Texas A&M University in Canyon. Wyman enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He was a long-time member of Ducks Unlimited and served as a state officer for several years. Wyman was known to be a collector of miscellaneous treasures and loved every gift he ever received. Wyman loved motorcycles and enjoyed many cross-country trips with wife Kelly and friends. Being an adventure enthusiast, he received his twin engine license and owned his own helicopter and planes. Wyman eventually started and maintained his own business, Prater Enterprises, where he had the pleasure of serving the community of Canadian and beyond for many years. Wyman was also a community minded man. He served as a Hemphill County Commissioner and was a long-time volunteer with the Canadian Volunteer Fire Department. Wyman was known to have a servant’s heart and always helped anyone he could. He had a soft spot for animals and enjoyed many pets over the years. Over his 78 years and numerous adventures, farming and running cattle remained his favorite pastime and he would talk about his cattle to anyone who would listen.

 

Wyman married Kelly Ann Nimmo on May 25, 1983, and they had recently celebrated 40 years of marriage. Kelly and Wyman were both members of the First Baptist Church.

 

Preceding Wyman were his parents, L.A. and Ethel Prater, sister, Darla Jean Stimson and son, Kyle Prater.

 

Survivors include his loving wife, Kelly Prater; 4 children, Shannon Prater, Gary Prater and wife Tricia, Jennifer Mills and husband Luke, Heath Prater and wife Nikki, all of Canadian; 9 grandchildren, Hank Prater, Evan Prater and Halie, Bailey Hudson and Braden, Kayla Prater and Erin Pickering, MadiCinn Prater, Tanner Schafer, Tripp Mills, Sophie Mills, Blaze Mills and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his cherished dogs, Bella and Red.
