Yvonne Vestal, lovingly known as Mimi, passed away at her home in Bloomburg on July 14, surrounded by family. Born on June 12, 1943, in Texarkana, TX to S.G. and Geneva (Blackmon) Nichols, Yvonne grew up in a loving Christian home. In 1953, the family moved to the quiet rural area of Bright Star, AR where she was inspired by reading and music. Yvonne learned to play the piano at an early age and spent a lifetime immersed in the creative arts. She graduated from Bright Star High School in 1961. Upon graduation, Yvonne attended East Texas State University in Commerce to become a teacher. While in college, she met her beloved, Kenneth "Toad". Married in 1965, they built a 55-year life together while raising and educating two children. Yvonne earned a master's degree in education, and taught countless children to read, write and play the piano.
During retirement, Yvonne was known as the family genealogy expert, town historian, local artist and author. Her church family and community at FBC Bloomburg meant everything to her. After Toad's passing in 2020, she spent the last few years of her life living in her cherished home, reading, painting, and writing fascinating, heart-warming stories on Facebook. Yvonne was a true teacher at heart, instilling in her family the importance of faith and service. Above all, she loved her grandchildren fiercely and unconditionally and delighted in their strong faith formation.
Yvonne is survived by her sister, Gloria Faye Solley; son, Brad Vestal (Laura); daughter, Joanna Hundl (Paul), and 4 amazing grandchildren, Audrey and Claire Vestal, twins Harrison and Haven Hundl and one nephew, Joe Solley (Kathy).
Visitation will be Thursday, July 17, at Hanner Funeral Service in Atlanta from 6 to 8 p.m.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 18, at First Baptist Church Bloomburg.
Graveside services immediately following at Salem Cemetery.
