I'm just learning about his passing as I moved away long ago. Where to start? He was my math teacher for 7th grade at the 7th grade center (now Southwestern middle school). He made learning fun. He taught us to use math to figure out the engine displacement to determine how many CC's a particular engine had. So for those of us who loved cars, it was a match made in heaven. He started a karate club that year for us as well. Imagine a teacher trying to do that these days. the liability and insurance people wound have a conniption fit. I was in the karate club that year, but don't know if it continued past that one year. I remember his love for motorcycles, as one day he dropped something he plugged into his bike. So he had me go down and plug it in for him to see if it worked since he couldn't leave the class. It did still work and he was relieved when I got back to class to tell him. He was an outstanding teacher and will be missed. RIP

Mr. Stephenson was my 7th grade math teacher at SMS. Everyone who is close to me knows Math was not my favorite or my strongest subject in school. Frankly I despise math all together, but that year was the most fun I had had in a math class, and he helped all of us out when we didn't understand certain equations. Mr. Stephenson will be greatly missed, as I send my condolences to his family

Steve was a wonderful person and a great teacher. I was in his class in 1986. We shared many interests and talked about them often. He will be greatly missed. May God be with his family during this difficult time.

My condolences and prayers go out to the Stephenson family. Mr. Stephenson was my 6th grade math teacher at Southwestern MS, although we didn't see eye to eye, he ended up being a very cool teacher. You will be missed.

Steve was so unique. He was a great math teacher. I'll always remember his stories about his summer motorcycle trips. He knew how to enjoy life. He loved his son. He was so proud of his son's service in the military. Every chance he got, he would brag. He kept a picture of his son in his uniform at his desk. One day I told him that his son was handsome and looked just like him. He really liked that compliment. He was a proud father! Thanks for the memories Steve!

Mr. Stephenson was and always will be the coolest teacher that ever graced the halls of any school in Volusia County. I'm 43 now,and he had to be just a kid out of school when I attended Southwestern...we still talk about him in the most favourable light. He taught from the heart, and that's rare.
He also taught my children...2 generations that adored him. His love for life, cars, bikes & the martial arts spoke volumes about the strong man he is.
Steve will be greatly missed, but I trust there are miles of happy trails in store for him as he will be a blessing in Heaven as he was here on Earth.

He was a great man and neighbour. He would let my son cut his lawn even if it didn't need it just to help him make some money. He will truly be missed.
