Anna Gertrude Hardison "Trudy" Cartner

Anna Gertrude "Trudy" Hardison Cartner, 84, died Friday, December 8, 2006 at Beverly Healthcare Center.
A memorial service will be conducted in the chapel at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 401 East Fourth Street, Greenville, NC on Saturday at 12 p.m. Her ashes will be interred at Greenwood Cemetery in Greenville and in the columbarium of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends in the parish hall immediately following the service.
Anna Gertrude Hardison was born December 21, 1921 at her ancestral home in Beaufort County, NC, the only daughter and second child of George Brown Hardison and Mary Ida Olivian Woolard. She was salutatorian, 1938, Stokes, NC High School; A.B., 1943, Meredith College where she was a varsity archer and later coached archery; and M.A., 1953, East Carolina College. She was married in 1942 to John Alexander Cartner, Jr. (1918-1980), of Caldwell County, NC. She taught middle school at Camp Lejeune, NC for the Department of the Navy from 1943-1947; in the Caldwell County, NC public schools, 1948-1953, where she was Supervisor of Elementary Education (1952-1954); middle school in Portsmouth, VA, 1955-1956; and from 1956 middle school in the Pitt County and Greenville City Schools, specializing in the teaching of reading and authoring papers on the subject. She held adjunct appointments at East Carolina University. She retired from teaching in 1983. She was an active member and served as an officer of the Greenville Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the honorary education society. She was parishioner of St. James Episcopal Church, Lenoir, NC, 1948-1954, and of St. Paul's Episcopal Church from 1956 where she was in the Altar Guild, a member of the vestry and a Lay Eucharistic Minister to nursing home residents.
She was preceded in death by her beloved companion, Kenneth M. Watkins (1909-1994) of Greenville, NC and brother, Charles Thelbert Hardison (1916-2002) of Plainview Farm, Pitt County, NC.
She is survived by daughter, Linda Brown Cartner Miller, M.D. and husband, Donald Salyerds Miller, Maule's Point, Blounts Creek, NC; son, John A.C. Cartner, J.D., PhD., Alexandria, VA; brother, George LaVerne Hardison and wife, Lois Kinlaw Hardison of Wadsworth, OH; caregivers, Nancy L. Perkins and Karen M. Cunningham, Greenville; grandchildren, Sarah T. C. Miller and Elizabeth R.B. Miller, Maule's Point, Christian W. J. Cartner, Hampden-Sydney College, VA and Natalie V.O. Cartner, Savannah College of Art and Design, GA;brother-in-law, C. Joseph Cartner, Newport News, VA; nieces, Kathie Hardison Waldrop, Marilyn O. Hardison Fasola and Diane Hardison Camp; nephews, Donald Hardison, Charles Kenneth Hardison and Dirk Hardison; seven grandnieces and eight grandnephews.
