Paul Mickey Obituary

Paul Mickey

May 13, 1937 - January 2, 2024

Lawrenceville, Georgia - Dr. Paul Mickey, 86, formerly of Durham, passed away at his home from complications of Parkinson's disease on January 2, 2024, surrounded by his family. Paul grew up in Ohio and graduated from the high school program of Kent State University. Following his service in the U.S. Air Force, Paul attended Harvard University and received a Bachelors of Arts in Social Psychology. During his time at Harvard, Paul married his wife Jane of 61 years. Following graduation from Harvard, Paul attended Princeton Theological Seminary, where he received a Bachelors of Divinity in Pastoral Theology and a Ph. D in Theology and Personality. They were blessed with two children: Bruce, who was unfortunately killed in a bicycle accident in September 1988; and Sandra, who was three years younger. Paul was a tenured professor at Duke Divinity School and wrote or co-authored 10 books. Paul switched professional careers and worked at Wells Fargo Advisors for 25 years and retired in 2017. Paul had many loves: Duke basketball, Trinity UMC, flying, teaching, doing radio broadcasts, riding motorcycles, hiking, and traveling. Paul and Jane enjoyed entertaining at their home -- be it Divinity School classes, church get-togethers or just watching Duke basketball with friends. Over the years, Paul enhanced many lives though his marriage counseling, crisis counseling and Stephen's Ministries. Paul is survived by his wife, Jane, sister, Lois McCoy and her children, Tim Dehner and Cathy Cunningham, brother-in-law, Ron McCoy, daughter, Sandi Winslow, son-in-law, Mike Winslow and two grandchildren, Tyler and Cameron Winslow. He is predeceased by his parents, Martin and Ellen Mickey, and son, Bruce Mickey. A graveside service will be announced at a later date.

I've all-too-recently that I have had few mentors in my life, including my academic career. As I developed this understanding, however, Dr. Mickey stood alone as a professor who proactively tried to lend his mentorship to my Duke Divinity (class of '73) experience. Alas, I was too young and/or clueless to understand his offers and, thus, likely missed out on what could have been an even more growth experience.

He was a thoughtful professor and later on a good friend. I am sorry to hear of his death. Sincere condolences to Jane and the family.

Paul was a blessing to many couples when he worked in my office in Raleigh NC providing marital counseling. He loved his Lord Jesus Christ and his wife and children.
