David Cappetta

CAPPETTA, DAVID A. David A. Cappetta, 58, of West Haven, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, on Friday, May 9, 2014. Born in New Haven on December 3, 1955, David was the son of Joseph R. and Janet B. Cappetta. An active member of the West Haven community, David was a long-time public servant, serving as West Haven’s Tax Collector, 2nd District City Councilman, and Democratic Town Committee member and most recently as Director of Finance at the West Haven Board of Education. He was frequently called upon to use his finance and accounting skills and willingly served as treasurer for numerous city political campaigns and committees. Additionally, David served 3 terms as Chapter President at the Southern Connecticut Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, where he brought together his vast network of family and friends to have fun and support the cause. David attended Central Connecticut State University. David worked as a tax auditor for the Internal Revenue Service prior to being elected Tax Collector in West Haven. A Certified Municipal Tax Collector, he also led the New Haven Tax Office. A consummate professional, David was an Enrolled Agent he created and ran a tax preparation and business accounting practice for over 25 years. David leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Julie A. Cappetta, his adored children, Kiley L. Cappetta and David A. J. Cappetta and his sister, Donna M. Craig and John W Downs of Carmel, Indiana. He also leaves his nephew and niece, Andrew J. Craig and Lauren M Craig of Carmel, his mother and father-in-law, Shirley and Fred Prekosovich, sister-in-law, Judy, Reginald Streater and nephew R.J. of Cheshire, and his former spouse, Sharon Cappetta of Milford, CT. David also leaves his beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, and his cherished Westies and Park Street friends with whom he maintained life-long friendships. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Deborah J. Cappetta and his brother, Joseph V. Cappetta. Known for his ready smile, his quick wit and self-deprecating humor, David was called by many names and nicknames, by far his most preferred was simply “Dad”. He will be missed by many. Visitation will take place MONDAY from 4 to 8pm, at the West Haven Funeral Home at the green. Remembrances and prayers will be offered from 7 to 8 pm. On Tuesday morning, all are invited to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 o’clock in St. John Vianney Church. Burial will be private.
