Kenneth Henrici Obituary

Kenneth V. Henrici
Kenneth V. Henrici, age 77, of North Haven, suddenly passed away on November 4, 2023, at Yale-New Haven Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Known as Ken or Kenny to his many friends and family, he was born in New Haven and raised in Hamden. Ken was a proud graduate of Hamden High School and The University of Connecticut, where he was a dedicated member of the men's varsity hockey team.
Ken served his country during the Vietnam War with honor as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Following his military service, he embarked on a lifelong career in public service in education. Starting as a teacher, he rose through the ranks and eventually became a superintendent, dedicating the last 16 years of his career to Regional School District 11, serving the Town of Chaplin.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Meryl, and his loving sons, Douglas Henrici and his wife Kyna and their three children Brendan, Ryan, and Dylan, and Michael Henrici and his wife Shannon. He is also survived by his brother, Paul Henrici and his wife Carol, and his sister Phyllis Henrici. Ken was predeceased by his parents, John and Elaine Henrici, as well as his siblings, Jack Henrici, Elaine Henrici, and Craig Henrici.

I was saddened to learn of Ken Henrici's passing. Ken was an outstanding educator who always put the students first. Both as a teacher and administrator he was faced with the many choices and decisions during his career. Whenever faced with a difficult choice or decision Ken always looked to do what was best for the students.

In several districts Ken consistently looked to improve curricula; he was a strong advocate for Advanced Placement courses, something that has benefited so many students. He also understood the complexity of Special Education law and the subsequent regulations that follow. Ken was an advocate for all students. He enjoyed meeting with students and was always eager to learn about their concerns and point of view.

Prior to becoming an educator Ken served his country and was a true American war hero, winning a Bronze Star for his courageous service in Vietnam.

Ken was a fine educator and a true gentleman. He had such a positive impact on so many students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members. Ken will indeed be missed.

Visits its to our Connecticut cousins were a highlight of every summer growing up. The event was usually our grandmother's birthday. On Grammy's 100th birthday, Ken loaded her on the back of the motorcycle and took her for a spin around the block, starting with a ride down the steep Ives Street driveway. All survived. Ken was in 100% in everything he did. Condolences to Meryl and all the other family members.

All to often we hear the term "self-made man". The fact of the matter is none of us are truly self-made. Like it or not we are all influenced and shaped in varying degrees by life's experiences and often by only a handful of people we encounter throughout this long journey. To this day there are certain individuals whom I will always remember and reflect upon the role they played in influencing who and what I am. For me more than a few of those individuals have been educators and Ken Henrici was one of them. Reading many of the posts on this site I am instantly reminded that great teachers and coaches like Ken, are like good friends. If you are lucky enough to have had at least a handful throughout your life then you have been truly blessed. I still recall back in Junior High when I could be prone to intellectual laziness Ken was one of those great teachers who inspired, motivated, and empowered me along with countless other students. I always looked forward to his class. Ken had a profound and lasting impact on scores of young people he taught and coached over the years. It may sound corny and hokey but Ken truly was one of those folks who helped to leave this world a better place than the way he found it. I will miss running into you and Meryl in a restaurant and sharing a Corona or a cocktail. I'm not sure who bought the last round but when we meet again we'll square it up. Rest in Peace, you will be sorely missed by all.

So sorry to hear of Kens passing I had him as a teacher at sleeping giant jr high in Hamden in the late 70s he was a very nice man I remember him having a beard back then. I use to see him once and a while years later in north haven and never forgot him.I know he's watching over his family.

To the Henrici Family. I'm deeply saddened and shocked to hear of Ken's passing. I worked with Ken, although only briefly, in Wallingford. I found Ken to be a student's first administrator and a shoot from the hip kind of guy! I really liked that in a superintendent! So sorry again. Fred Rossomando - music teacher - Wallingford CT.

I have read the tributes to Ken and it is obvious what a great person he was and how many people he touched. I had the opportunity to meet and spend time with Ken through hockey where my son played with and against Doug and Mike.
Both Ken and Meryl were always supportive of their sons endeavors.
We all carry with us the positive impression and experience having known Ken Henrici. Very sad to not have him any longer with us, but I bet we will all remember the numerous conversations and experiences we had with Ken, these will never end. Sorry to not see you any longer

Deepest sympathies to the Henrici family for their sad loss. I knew Ken when we were teachers at SGJHS. He was very well liked by colleagues and students. We had a lot of fun playing in the slow pitch softball league. We had motorcycles and he always rode with great enthusiasm. He was an American Warrior.

To Kenny´s family I send my sincere condolences. I´ve known Ken since the family first moved to Hamden. All the neighborhood kids hung around the Henrici house playing football in the backyard or a good game of table tennis in their barn. Ken was the first person who I knew to get his bicycle stolen while we were exploring the Sleeping Giant. Rest In Peace my friend
