Nicholas Economopoulos Obituary

Nicholas Economopoulos
05/26/2022
Nicholas "Eco" Economopoulos, 72, of Wallingford, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at Hartford Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the loving husband of Susan (Marconi) Economopoulos.
Nick was born in Westbury, NY, son of the late James Economopoulos and Mary Marino, where he was a standout football and baseball player at W. Tresper Clarke High School. He went on to play both sports at Central CT State University where he met his future wife, Sue, and earned his teaching degree in Business Education. Upon graduation, he began his teaching and coaching career at Lyman Hall High School. In 1972, he, along with Judy Samaha, started the tradition of Powderpuff Football which has been a beloved event in the community for 50 years. He also coached soccer, baseball, and football, but his true love was coaching basketball. His basketball career spanned several decades awarding him 4 state championships, numerous league championships, and over 600 career wins. In addition to these accomplishments, in 1988 Nick started the Connecticut Starters AAU program, a club that has become one of the top programs on the east coast. One of his greatest joys was coaching his granddaughters' travel and AAU basketball teams, and passing on his love of the game to his children and grandchildren.
Nick is survived by his wife Susan, his children Christie (Steve) Madancy, Lynn Economopoulos (Dave Behun), Nickie (Jon) Whitehouse, Shani Green (Peter Greco), and James (Tayler) Economopoulos; and his grandchildren Kayce, Dori, Ellie, Olive, Henry, Cora, Sunshine, and Poppy.
In addition to his immediate family were his close friends, the extended Marconi family, his former students, players, coaching partners, and Lyman Hall colleagues: all of whom he loved dearly and within whom Nick's legacy will forever live on. His passion, empathy, and charisma positively impacted countless lives.
Nick's family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., on Tuesday, May 31st, from 3 to 7pm (the family requests masks be worn inside the funeral home). Eco touched many lives. Instead of mourning his loss, the family invites everyone to a celebration of his life. Please come and share stories and laughs at the P.N.A. Park, 171 N. Plains Industrial Highway, Wallingford, on Wednesday, from 11:30am to 5:30pm. Dress casual, Eco would want it that way. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to: Pink Ladies' Sisters for Hope Foundation, PO Box 682, Wallingford, CT 06492. (www.thepinkladiessistersforhope.org) Please visit online memorial at www.wallingfordfh.com for online guestbook and directions.

From day one, Eco. Mr. E. was and still is my favorite teacher. We looked forward to every class my junior year. He gave us all endearing nicknames, and incorporated comedy and laughter into every lesson. He made that year of high-school one I'll never forget, from his stories or shenanigans in class, everyone agreed, he was a legend among teachers at Lyman Hall. He's one of the only teachers I snuck back in school to visit, even a year later he remembered us, called us by our nicknames and made the whole class laugh in first period. I only learned of his passing yesterday but feel lucky for having the opportunity to know him, to learn from him and have a teacher who was also a friend. My condolences to all!

I was a roommate of Nick´s at Central Connecticut in the early 70´s. I went West after graduating in `73 and never saw Nick again. I do remember some great touch football games in our backyard and a host of laughs as Nick´s roommate with four other guys. My girlfriend, Chris, visited Central often and our favorite memory was the farewell party to the house we rented across from the old Student Center as it was to be leveled in `72. Nick was always someone you could trust and certainly have a good time with and was a great cook! Susan, Chris and I extend our belated sympathies to you and your family. God Bless.

In 1975 our powder puff football team somehow came up with the idea to get Coach E a dog. Janet Hurley and I went to animal haven in north haven and picked out this cute pup . Coach named her Puff and I actually believe they were in his picture gallery I just watched. I remember the last timeI saw coach. My twin Margaret Ann and I were celebrating our birthday with family in Northford at the little breakfast joint. We both went up to say Hi and have a quick chat. I enjoyed knowing him and playing football for him as our coach. I’m sorry I’m so late sending my condolences but I just saw this as I’m living out of town .

I knew Nick through the Democrats. I didn't know him well, but he was always kind, polite, sincere, but also a good sense of humor. I only found out about your loss the other day, but thought I would share here.

Nick, obviously was a pioneer and legend for girl's basketball in the State of Connecticut, and across the USA. He was a fine educator, effective board of Education member and supportive Town Council member after he retired. he was forthright, honest, caring and passionate man. His wife Sue worked for me in the Compensatory Education Dept. and she was one of the most effective teachers working with marginal at risk students. I enjoyed our conversations at the Wallingford Y when we were there numerous times. he will be sorely missed by all. I offer my deepest sympathies to Sue and the whole family. God Bless them all ! Sincere condolences to the family and friends. Incredibly thankful for the opportunity to learn and work with him during summers at camps and events. First time coaching as a high school senior at a CT Starters camp and have been coaching ever since. Such a respect and admiration I have that I cannot truly express. I would say thank you everytime I saw him which would be when Jimmy and I would have a game or scrimmage. I wish blessings to all of his family and may they be comforted in this time and beyond.

NIck and I were college roommates at Central. When I was a wet behind the ears freshman looking for a place to live, Nick welcomed me with open arms. We became close friends and my fondest recollection of those days were the baseball road trips we took together all over the northeast. Nick and I were setback partners and needless to say, we never lost a match. We took many a meal stipend from our teammates. I will always remember Nick as a can do guy. He would set a goal and he would always achieve it. So sorry to hear about his passing, Susie. He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace my friend,

Mr. Eco, I´m heartbroken. You were the ultimate influence on me growing up with Jimmy. Truly a difficult time but I take solace in knowing you´re already scouting a team, coaching up the "Match" defensively and gathering everyone like you always did for your dice baseball tournaments. Never forgotten.

Sue & Family,

Having been 'out of the circuit' for quite some time now, I was shocked & quite saddened to hear the news. Nick was not only the most knowledgeable coach for whom my daughter Christina has ever played, Nick was a man of passion - for the game he loved to teach - and compassion for those fortunate enough to be taught by him.
Many are the fond memories of being in Nick's company during 'down time' at the AAU tournaments ....especially the Nationals in Oklahoma City. The team dinner at Cattlemen's Steakhouse was a blast! Nick was known as a great coach; for sure, he was even a greater human being.
Sue, may you - and the entire Economopoulos Family - find solace in the joyous, cherished memories you share and were so truly blessed.

...there were 2 teachers that made an indelible mark on my time at Lyman Hall Mr Baksa and Mr E. Both were great teachers and both knew how to relate to the students better than most others. I remember the rare days walking into class and we played hangman rather than accounting sometimes we all needed to just chill. RIP Mr E. Thanks for the memories. Class of 1976

I taught in the business department at Lyman Hall and also coached the boys basketball team. Working with Nick was a pleasure. He was never shy to to express his opinions and I always appreciated that part of him. I don't think many coaches can accomplish winning state championships at two different schools. His personality was a rare gift. Nick , rest in peace and I will always remember you. Tom Bukowski

There are those folks in life you can look back upon that made an impact to oneself. Nick or Eco was exactly that person. It was one of my personal fortunes to get to know Eco when my daughter Caroline played for him and the Starters in 2009/2010. He was looking for someone to keep score and I volunteered. Didn't realize what a great friend I was going to make. And a coaching mentor on top of that. As a travel coach I was able to observe Eco in practice and during the games, meticulously writing down his practice agenda and plays on offense and defense. But it was how he treated the kids I was most impressed with. Not only did it have a positive impact on my daughter, but it helped me as well in my coaching. I'll never forget the times at Mr. G's and being introduced to Greek "lemon soup"!! I loved it but not my twin brother Paul who would rib Eco about it!! Or when my Torrington PAL organization was able to obtain the basketball shooting gun he had stored at East Catholic HS. We got a lot of great use out of that machine. It was neat one Saturday when all the Starter coaches and Eco came up to the Torrington Armory to teach us how to best utilize it. We had all these kids there to try it out and before they could step up t it, Eco had them all line up as he always began his practices to teach them the proper shooting form. It was quintessential Nick!! He was truly a great man who made his mark in this world and made it a better place to live for many of us, students, players, fellow coaches, parents and of course , his wonderful family. Sue, Jimmy, Joe T., thanks for sharing Nick with us.

When I think of Nick ECO I remember his big smile for everyone We we’re both teachers at Lyman Hall when I became the varsity baseball coach I picked Eco to coach the freshman team because of his knowledge of the fundamentals and his skills in being able to teach them All the kids loved Eco Once Eco arranged for all the teams to go NY to play games against his old high school and visit the city the players and I will always remember the fun and stories from that trip Eco also for several years dressed as Santa Claus and came over to the house to the delight of my children on Christmas Eve Nick will be greatly missed I am so sorry for your loss Bill Freeman

We started at Lyman Hall together in 1971. Nick made his presence felt from day one. He became one of the most popular teachers in the school. He became an outstanding teacher, coach and role model for students. The loss will have a great impact on the school and on the whole community. Our sincere condolences to Sue and his entire family. Rest in peace my friend.

I first met Nick at CCSC . We were both involved in athletics and had quite a few mutual friends. I did not see him too often after college but, I did follow his successful coaching career. Through the years he would stop in at my New London Restaurant whenever a Starters Tourney was played locally. He would normally have his Greek soup and the biggest steak on the menu. He was a great person who will be sorely missed by his family and all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

I will always remember Nicky. He made an impression wherever he went. We were friends form the day he joined my kindergarten class. He felt responsible for my broken wrist in third grade and carried my lunch tray for the rest of the year. One day as I was walking through the the student center at CCSU ( I had just transferred there) I heard my name being called. I turned around to see Nicky racing towards me with a giant welcoming smile on his face. I regret that we lost contact after college. His presence on this earth will be missed by many but he will never be forgotten.

And, he wanted to bet on golf!

All of us have mourned the loss of a family member or close friend... And of course, in that case there is pain, grief and loss. Close or not, if you met Nick, you are mourning.

Nick was an unusual character with such a fun and loving personality. Whether he pointed to you with a smile, picked you out in a crowd or simply brushed past you and said hello, any interaction with Nick left you with...sparkles. You always...always... felt better after seeing or talking to him (the sparkles).

You know the world is so much less fun without him; my world is so much less fun without him. Thanks for the sparkles, Nick, they will keep me smiling for the rest of my days.

Unfortunately, we are facing a health challenge of our own and will not be able to make the services. Sue, Christie, Steve, Nickie, Lynnie, and Jimmy please know that I loved your dad and am grateful for so many great stories and millions of laughs.

Economopoulos Family,
I met Nick at the YMCA in the late 80's. He was part of a group of racquetball warriors that played beginning at 5 AM. I enjoyed his company and talking sports with him. Prayers for his eternal rest and for you during your time of sorrow.

I was fortunate to have Nick on my freshman basketball team at Clarke. He was also the Junior Class President and I was the Advisor. In the Junior year you pick out your class ring. The salesman asked for a student to help and I suggested Nick. He did such a great job the man told him he would put his whole name on the ring instead of just initials. He asked Nick for his name and Nick replied Nicholas Bartholomew Economopoulos. The man gulped and said “it couldn’t be a Tom Smith.” Nick was just so special. He worked at his uncle’s’ restaurant shucking clams in the summer. I hired him to do that for our Yacht Club and people just stood and watched him amazed at how fast he did it. Nick played Santa Claus for our children and our neighbors. We fondly remember Susan and Nick’s Greek-Italian wedding. We remember meeting Susan’s family and having Mr. Marconi’s famous meatballs. Just special people. Nick - you made us so proud of all your accomplishments and we are so thankful to have had you in our lives. You will live in our hearts forever. Frank and Joan Saracino

I had the pleasure of working with Eco at Lyman Hall...and of watching him coach the 1985 and 1986 girls' basketball teams to victory. He was a kind soul, full of wit and good humor. One of a kind. I wish the many people who loved him the peace and comfort of happy memories.

I knew Nick for less than a year. I was fortunate enough to be hired as a coach by his son Jimmy, and Nick always made me feel as if I was a lifelong friend of the family. He was at nearly every game and was always kind and funny until game time, when he was locked in. He would often join our timeout huddles and offer stuff that our coaching staff had somehow overlooked. When we won the state championship in March, I made sure I would remember who was there and was able to share it with. I would give anything to have had the moment with family members that Jimmy and Nick had that day. I know that Sue - another fantastic person - and the children are having a tough time right now. All I can say is that it does get better. Lean on each other and always remember the good times, of which I'm sure there are many.

I went to LHHS in the mid-80s. I didn’t know what field I wanted to go into after high school. I thought maybe a psychiatrist. But then I took accounting with Mr. E as an elective my senior year and really enjoyed his class. I went to college for accounting and have been a CPA for almost 30 years. I will always remember him as the teacher who helped to shape my future. My deepest condolences to his family. Rest in peace, Mr. E.

Dear Sue and Family,
We are so saddened for your loss. Although, it has been many years since we were neighbors we have not forgotten all the great times we had with you, Nick and your family. Nick was one of a kind with his dynamic personality, thoughtful nature and his ability to make life fun. We followed his Lyman Hall Girl's Basketball coaching career during the 1980's attending many of the games and delighting in watching his team win award after award. We live out of state now, otherwise we would be attending the celebration of his life. He lived life to the fullest so have a great time honoring the man, husband, father, grandfather and friend who brought much happiness to many. He will not be forgotten and you all will be in our prayers.
All our love,

My mother, Sheryl Tinturin-Porter, and I were both lucky enough to have Mr.Eco as our teacher at Lyman Hall. He taught my mom in the 70’s and me in the 90’s. We have always ADORED him and thought the absolute world of him!!!!! He will always be our FAVORITE teacher of all time !!!
I’ll never forget when he surprised the class and popped a video in the VCR of himself on the dance floor of his cruise ship (in a dance contest) .
My best friend , Stephanie Howell , and I are never able to tell an “Eco” high school story without cracking up laughing . His personality was larger than life and his sarcasm and jokes and fun-loving attitude will never ever go forgotten .
We love you , Mr. Eco!!!!! Xoxo

Nick gave me a chance. He put me in situations other coaches hadn’t. I learned so much from him. How to play ball, sure. But also how to have fun. Laugh at myself. Laugh with him. I love this man, and owe him a tremendous amount. He taught me The Whip. What more needs to be said. My love to his family. CT girls bball lost an icon but what he taught all of us will never be lost. (PS when he called his “game winner” play as the first play of the game was my absolute favorite.)

Barb and I want to extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to all of you on the passing of truly a kind and compassionate man. Nick did not only know how to coach basketball in his unique manner but also cared about people. Yes, Eco bought home two state championship for East Catholic but what he did off the court that made him special like arranging a night to honor the family of the tragic 9/11 event by buying gifts for the young children and presenting a monetary gift too. There are only a few people in your life that have such a profound effect on you that you thank God they were brought into your life. Eco was that man in my life. He was my greatest Coach, most faithful friend and mentor. A light has been extinguished but his memory and love endures. My sincerest condolences to the family and thank you for sharing Eco with us.

Mr. E was roughly half my current age when he invited me to join Lyman Hall’s varsity baseball team on a trip to Long Island. He seemed larger than life, wise, intense, but at the same time, capable of a gentleness that defied all these attributes. In 1985, I had the pleasure of interviewing him for a college Sports Broadcasting class assignment. He was candid and quite thoughtful in his responses. I recall him being even a little excited by it. No doubt, he had many more interviews over his illustrious coaching career. My condolences to his family and the many others he touched who feel loss at this time.

Although I did not know Nick personally, I knew of him, as he was a legend in basketball—Wallingford.?!!
However, I did “know” him through working as a teacher at Dag, and getting to know his beautiful wife, Sue. Their love of family was/is unsurpassed.
My deepest sympathies to his lovely wife Sue, their children, and their special grandchildren.
I am so very sorry for your loss.
God bless and comfort you all,

Fondly, Katherine Kennedy

Growing up, Mr. Eco had the nickname "dad" to me. Father of my most dearest, best friend Nickie, Mr. Eco and the whole Economopoulos family became my 2nd family and I love them all so very much. Thank you Mr. Eco, for accepting me in to the family and in to your home every day. You always made me laugh. I will forever remember all of the time we spent together both at school and at the house. (I practically lived at your house so you really didn't have much of a choice ). You are one of a kind, and it is no wonder why you are loved by so many. You will be missed terribly but your beautiful family and friends will continue to celebrate you every single day. ❤ I love you always. Laureen
