RALPH HOFFMAN Obituary

HOFFMAN, RALPH EDWARD, MD Hoffman, Ralph Edward, MD of New Haven, Connecticut, died at home with his beloved family and dear friends on Monday, February 1, 2016 after a year-long struggle with glioblastoma. He was 66 years old. At the time of his death, he was a Professor of Psychiatry and the Medical Director of the YPH Adult Intensive Outpatient Program at Yale New Haven-Hospital. He also served in many administrative capacities, including Medical Director, Research Director, and Acting Psychiatrist-in-Chief for the Yale Psychiatric Institute. Ralph received his BS in mathematics from Brown University in 1971, his MD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1976 and completed his psychiatry residency at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York in 1979. He came to Yale for fellowship training in 1979 and became a faculty member in psychiatry and an active member of the translational neuroscience community for the past 37 years. Ralph was the recipient of many honors in the U.S. and around the world. His scholarly work was widely published and led to, among other things, a featured story on auditory hallucinations on ABC’s 20/20, and an interview for Science Friday on NPR. In 1992 the Department of Psychiatry awarded him its highest honor for a clinician and educator, the Stephen Fleck Award. He was, first, last and always, a man of compassion and science, with a penetrating intelligence, dry wit, and clinical empathy that enabled him to put others, even patients with severe mental illness, quickly at ease. As a researcher he gained international renown for his pioneering work on the pathophysiology and treatment of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia, a research focus he pursued with diligence and passion over nearly four decades. Against all odds, he continued his research after his diagnosis. Striking in his height and his humility, Ralph was a singular figure and well-recognized on the streets of New Haven. We will ever see him in our minds this way: back-pack clad, coattails flying, astride his bicycle, no matter the weather. He was esteemed by his colleagues, loved by his patients, and adored by his wife and partner of 28 years, Mary Ann Frank, Ph.D., and their 20 year old twins, Lily and Lucas Hoffman. He is also survived by a brother, Walter Hoffman and his wife, Tina, and nephew Nick, of Stormville, New York. He was the son of the late John & Elva Hoffman of Wappingers Falls, NY. A private memorial is planned. Contributions in Dr. Hoffman’s honor may be made to: Research Account of Dr. Joachim Baehring, Yale Cancer Center c/o Julie Parr, Senior Director of Development, 157 Church Street, New Haven, CT 06510-2100

Ralph was a sturdy, upright man who hid from nothing, so had nothing to hide. He found his work and he did it.

We are so late in expressing condolences as I have just learned via an unrelated internet search of Dr. Hoffman's passing.

Our son participated in Dr. Hoffman's RTMS study and received tremendous help from it. Although the voices did return, the brief respite helped our son gain some control over the symptom and was able to return to school and complete his Bachelor and Masters degrees.

Our family is shocked and deeply saddened. We will always remember Dr. Hoffman with appreciation and deep affection.

Our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Hoffman Family.

I have to say that I am shocked and saddened to hear the Doctor Ralph Hoffman has passed away. I had the opportunity to speak to him over the phone and via e-mail several time about the research that he was doing with patients with Schizophrenia. I have to say that this man really did give me hope that one day those that suffer from Schizophrenia will be treat with out having to take medication. To the rest of the Hoffman family my condolences go out to all of you.

Rest in Peace Doctor Ralph Hoffman.

Dear Mary Ann and family,
I learned tonight from Arnold Wilson, an old friend from YPI days, about Ralph's death. Mary Ann, I am so deeply saddened by this terrible news, and my heart goes out to you and Lily and Lucas. I wish I had known so that I could have come to the service, but I want you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. Ralph had such bouancy and generosity of spirit, such deep kindness and compassion for severely disturbed patients and such a capacity to care for his friends and students, and so much love for you and the twins. I learned so much from him during my postdoc and wish we had kept up our friendship. One always thinks there will be time, but as you said at Rebecca Behrend's memorial service--this is only the beginning. John joins me in expressing our sadness and concern for you and your children. I will try to reach you this week.

I am so saddened by this news. I only met Ralph once when he was attending a conference in SF with his wife, my cousin, Mary. I was so taken by how easy he was to be with and to talk to and forever thankful that my cousin had found such a gem to share her life with.

Ralph was a kind and easy going person. He was a dedicated person who always excelled at all aspects of life.
Whether work, friends or family his compassion to help others by the knowledge of his field and true caring is what made this man stand out in the crowd. My wife worked with him years ago at YPI.
He will be sorely missed.

I last saw Ralph as we headed for our bikes tethered in front of the psychiatric hospital a few weeks back. He was cheerful and friendly as ever and made encouraging remarks about my colluding with him to advance the practice of bicycling to work. There was no hint of sadness or struggle that might betray his terminal diagnosis. Those of us at the periphery of his life stand shocked at his loss, for all his accomplishments, a remarkably friendly and unpretentious man. I sent him a trans-cranial magnetics candidate last year. The door closes.
