Bob, I am very sorry to hear about Mike passing away. He was a great guy, who really made an impression on everyone who came into contact with him. He was certainly one of the most popular students at BAHS.

Mike and Bob Sabolyk Leaving Berlin on the Duty Train the Summer of 1963

Maggie Ellithorpe MacPherson

December 13, 2007

What a shock and deep sadness I felt to return from a trip last night and find the news of Mike's death. I have not seen him since he left on the Duty Train from Berlin with his family. I still have the picture I took as we all gathered to say goodbye. I'd cheered for him during football seasons, and enjoyed his spirit and humor when I dated his older brother my senior year. As I close my eyes, I see can picture him, his mom and Dad, Col. Sabolyk, and brother Bob just as they were in Berlin. To read of him as an older man with two degrees, a career and a family is hard to imagine as in my mind he is still the teenager who left Berlin the summer of 1963. Where did the time go? Why couldn't our paths have crossed again? If my heart is heavy, and I am shedding tears for Mike, I can't imagine what a difficult time this is for his family and all those close to him. I send my condolences to all of them during this difficult time of loss and grieving.
