Phil was born and raised in Edgewater in the loving embrace of his many Sicilian aunts and uncles all from the Aeolian Islands of the Volcano and Lipari. He was ordained May 28, 1966 by Archbishop Thomas A. Boland in Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newark. He was first assigned to Our Lady of Good Council Church in Newark from 1966 - 1968. He was there for the Newark riots and responded to a desire to bring healing and comfort to the frustrations of so many who wanted to be heard. He developed an after school 60-voices boys choir from the school which sang at the Sunday and Holyday Masses. It was there that he learned to love the diversity of city parish life to which he was devoted later on in West New York. He was assigned to Seton Hall Prep in South Orange to teach music, studying Music Education at the Catholic University in Washington DC and meeting many experienced teachers and educators. In 1970, University President Msgr. Tom Fahy asked him to leave the Prep and come into the university to develop what was a new trend in pastoring students called Campus Ministry. Fr. Phil began by himself and left a Campus Ministry of ten staff ministers. It was during this time that he received a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Drew University in Madison in the specialty of developing Collegial Ministry. While at Seton Hall he was appointed Director of the Italian Institute succeeding Msgr. Monella who had served as Chaplain to the Italian Forces in WWII, was a commendatore of Italian Government, a man of great learning in Italian Letters and admired by Fr Phil began his studies as a Phd. candidate at Rutgers University in New Brunswick for eight years, spending six summers at the University of Urbino, Italy. Every author from the Troubadors and Dante in the court of the Kingdom of Sicily, right up to the 20th century works of Sciasia, Calvino and D'Annunzio were studied with delight, while focusing on the given topic of his doctoral theses: The Influence of St Augustine in the works of Petrarch. He served as Director for two years when it was absorbed into the academics studies of the University. Fr. Phil went on to found the first ministry in the Archdiocese to serve HIV/Aids sufferers with the blessing of then Archbishop McCarrick. He recruited volunteers to join him at St Michael's Hospital, with Fr. Paul Viale and Fr. John Nickas in an education program about the virus and then visiting the patients with HIV/Aids. Fr. Phil was among the first to be certified as an Aids Counselor. Archbishop Gerety asked Fr. Phil to serve as a Coordinator of the Charismatic Renewal for a period of three years. After serving 28 years Fr. Phil stepped into his retirement. Fr. Phil's last assignment was at Our Lady of Libera Church in West New York where he served as Pastor for 20 years, 1991-2011. He often said it was his greatest joy. Fr. Phil became a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and chaplain of the Madonna Della Libera Council. Upon retirement he lived in Guttenberg, close to his parishioners and friends. He often said he never regretted one day in his priesthood which gave him so much joy and many blessings. He ended every sermon in the words "God Bless You, God Love You and Praise the Lord."

I only found out about Fr Phil's passing today I line. MY HUSBAND AND I CRIED OUR EYES OUT. Fr Phil married us at Our Lady of Libera Church on July 19, 2003 We were blessed to have him preside over a 10 year anniversary vow renewal ceremony on July 19 2013 at Holy Trinity Church in Ft Lee, NJ. He was such a gentle, loving, caring, sensitive man with a great sense of humor and who loved eating especially my crabmeat quiche!! He was such a holy man of God. One of his true angels on earth. We only wish that we knew that he passed. We would have definitely been there to send him off. We will surely see him again. Fr Phil we have prayed for you every day since we met you and that will continue until the day we die. Chris and I will so miss you!! We have a message on our home phone answering machine from Fr Phil telling us of the confirmation of our vow renewal calling us "the anniversary couple!" That message will never be erased. I've listened to it many times just to hear Fr Phil's voice. If we can obtain Fr Phil's brothers address I have something that I'd like to mail to him. I JUST BOUGHT IT TODAY amazingly enough! And he was an amazing man. Fr Phil!! You will be so missed. But we'll see you soon! Much love (now you're with ALL your Libby's!!)

I will always remember our phone conversations. I still remember the first day I met Fr. Phil at Our Lady of Good Counsel with his big beaming smile. We kept in touch all these years. The days of singing in the choir were some of my best memories. Going to his parents house in East New York for lunch was a nice surprise. My 93 year Mom and I will miss Phil a great deal. Too bad my wife will never get to meet Phil in this world. We still remember seeing Phil and Floyd together many times wondering who was who.
My family's deepest condolences on the loss of one very special and great guy and one wonderful priest and a great friend. Vaya con Dios my friend. I will miss you a lot. I will be praying for you.

"Come, Blest of my Father, Yours is the Kingdom prepared for you!" When I hear this passage of the gospel, while I know they are Matthew's words, I hear Phil Rotunno and his wonderful hymn -- a hymn composed in his days at Darlington Seminary.

Phil was a gentle yet powerful spirit, one that is still very much alive -- in our memory and in our thanksgiving to God for this remarkable priest.

Two of the most blessed moments of my life happened with Fr. Phil standing before me.... my first wedding, and the baptism of my first son, Jesse. While an undergraduate student at Seton Hall University from 1976-1980 I had the privilege and honor of attending so many of Fr. Phil 's masses and campus ministry events, and I have held this special man of God in my heart and prayers ever since! He was perhaps the most peaceful soul I have ever met and I will miss him on earth but I know I will see him for sure again in Heaven!!! My condolences to his beloved family.

I was a transfer student from St. Benedict's Prep and arrived at Seton Hall in Sept 1972. Fr. Phil was a great source of comfort in a difficult transition. I knew in the back of my mind that I wanted to serve the Lord as a priest, but seeing such a kind and joyful priest who gave willingly of his talents helped to reinforce that. I was honored when he attended my First Mass in 1988. May the good Lord reward him for his generous and good priestly heart exemplified in so many good works that gave glory to the Lord.

Fr. Phil was truly a GENTLEman, a real man of God and always a friend to so many of us. He taught me freshman year at Seton Hall Prep, married my wife & I at Seton Hall's Immaculate Conception Chapel and always stayed in touch. I would look forward to reading his yearly Christmas cards. God Bless you Fr. Phil.... You touched so many lives in a good way. We were lucky to have known you. We will always remember you.... Rest well with our Lord Jesus Christ.....

Father Rotunno was an exceptional man who helped my family member through a very difficult time while at SHU many years ago.. He walked the walk and talked the talk. He accepted people for the situation they were in and made you feel welcomed and special in the church. It is not surprising that he could do the same for Aids patients. He shared God's love with people who needed it most around him. He had a gift God gave him and we are very thankful. I have no doubt he is in heaven.

A kind, gentle, always upbeat, and always faithful servant of God has left us. May Our Lord, Jesus Christ, take Fr. Phil to the mansion He has prepared for him.
I will always think happily of the years we spent as colleagues at Seton Hall Prep.
"Well done, good and faithful servant!"
