Daniel Rogovich Obituary

DANIEL L. ROGOVICH "COACH" CALUMET TOWNSHIP/ DUNEDIN, FL Daniel L. Rogovich, age 72, passed away June 9, 2010 as the result of injuries sustained in a single vehicular accident while traveling to Northwest Indiana. Daniel was born on April 25, 1938 in Chicago, IL to Anton and Gasperina Rogovich, and was a resident of Calumet Township, IN for 42 years. Most recently, he resided in Dunedin, FL. Dan attended Lindblom High School in Chicago, IL, received a BA from St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, IN and earned a MA from Indiana University. His beloved wife of 41 years, Katherine (Jackson) Rogovich, preceded him in 2001. "Coach" is survived by his children: Trina (Chip) Semplinski, Wendy (Skipp) Schultz, Carie (Donald) Kennedy, Heidi (Charlie) Dees and Peter (Kristina) Rogovich. Dan was a grandfather to 13, a friend, teammate, teacher, Driver's Ed instructor and of course, a loyal basketball coach to thousands. As a fixture for 32 years in the gym and hallways at Andrean High School, " Rogy's" wit, humor, stories and bad jokes will indeed be sadly missed and fondly remembered. A Memorial Mass is being planned for Saturday July 17, 2010 at 11:00 AM at SS. Peter & Paul in Merrillville, IN. A reception will immediately follow at Andrean High School. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be donated in Coach Rogovich's name to Andrean High School. Arrangements are being completed by Burns Funeral Home, Crown Point, under Savich & Semplinski Directors. (219) 769-0044.

Mr. Rogovich was my teacher for drivers' ed and to this day he comes to mind every time I parallel park. He made something so daunting into a piece of cake. He was a kind, patient and good- humored teacher. I'm sorry to hear about his passing and offer my sympathies to his family.

I not only was taught driver's ed and health class by Rogy, I got to enjoy his humor on the way to school for 4 years. He would pick me up on his way to Andrean with Carie and Wendy in the car. He was truly a great guy.

Rogy knew it was tough times at our house, and when it was time for my daughters to learn to drive, he gave me a super discount, which I really appreciated. Kathy used to tell me that when they were on vacation he went to every bookstore he could find to buy joke books! He was never speechless--I'll never forget some of his quips. Before assemblies at school, he used to entertain the student body with his yoyo tricks, which were awesome! Miss you, Rogy...

Trina, Wendy, Carrie, Heidi, and Peter. I smiled when I saw your dads name on the sports page last week but in an instant my smile turned to tears. I am so sorry for your loss. I have so very many great memories of hanging out at your house. I can still hear your Mom yelling for you kids & see the Drivers Ed car sitting in the driveway. He was loved & will be missed by so many. My prayers go out to you all.

Very sorry to see that Dan has passed on. I taught at Andrean in 1971-73 and we shared a lot of good times. He even came to my wedding.

Trina, Wendy, Carrie, Heidi, and Peter, I was so sorry to hear of your loss. He was a large part of what made Andrean, such a wonderful "family", and high school experience for me. I loved to hear his jokes, both at school, and at outside events, like at the Restyanszkis. I don't ever remember him not smiling, and that always touched me. Even though your sorrow is great right now, and nothing can take that away, I hope that you will find some comfort in your memories, and in the fact that you'll see him and your mother again some day. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

My sympathies to your entire family. I have so many wonderful memories of Rogy, and I am deeply saddened by his death. He left a great mark on the many students and players that got a chance to learn from him. And thanks to him, the roads are full of much better drivers! All my best regards, Rhonda Kokot, AHS 1990

My deepest sympathy to the Rogovich Family. Your Dad was one of my favorites. We always shared jokes and he never said no when I asked him to substitue for a sick teacher. He was a great coach, teacher, friend and father. He will be missed. My prayers are with all of you his dear children.

We will miss you Coach. Drivers Ed was a blast with you. The jokes were great also. I loved seeing you "school" guys on the court with your black rimmed glasses.
My friendship and being a teammate with your son Pete was a great part of high school also.

Trina, Wendy, Carrie, Heidi, and Peter. I'm so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. I am in Montana for the summer and I heard the news via a text from my niece in Arizona and an email from Tom Konrady in Brazil. I couldn't help but think of how many lives your dad has touched. There are niners all over the country...and outside of it that are sad today. We had a lot of laughs in the years we worked together, and he taught me everything I knew about basketball and better yet taught me to love the game. I'm glad I had a chance to visit him in Florida. Andrean hasn't been the same since he retired. I hope you find comfort in each other and in the happy memories of life with your mom and dad. They sure raised a fine family. Love BOMB

My condolences to the Rogovich family. Rogy was the reason I played
basketball. He never turned down the opportunity to beat you in a
free throw or shooting challenge; while teaching a life lesson or two
with his God given talent to make you laugh. Thanks coach for being
my teacher, coach, mentor, and friend. Heaven will be a better and
happier place to have Coach Rogovich, We love and miss you.
