JULIUS JACOBSON Obituary

JACOBSON--Julius H. II, MD Julius H. Jacobson II, M.D., "Jack," age 95, peacefully, on December 4. A brilliant vascular surgeon, he pioneered vascular microsurgery and was called the "father of microsurgery." Possessed of a fertile and inventive mind that encouraged the cross fertilization of ideas, his early research at the University of Vermont proved transformational. Innovating from his study of cell microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania, he was the first to use a microscope to anastomose tiny blood vessels. This breakthrough fostered advances in many areas of surgery such as cardiac bypass, organ transplant, neurosurgery, skin grafting and plastic surgery. He developed a double-headed microscope for use in the operating room, a diploscope, one of which resides in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. He also pioneered hyperbaric surgery at Mount Sinai, his longtime professional home. He developed new surgical tools and suture materials to make these advances possible. Early in his career he was the first Jewish chief resident in surgery at Columbia, no small feat in that era. Throughout his career, legions of grateful patients acknowledged his life-saving work. The University of Vermont College of Medicine awarded him an honorary Doctor of Science degree in 1999. Born in Toledo and growing up in Chicago, Detroit, and New York, he attended the magnet Townsend Harris High School, earned tuition for college working as a photographer, joined the navy, then studied cell microbiology as mentioned to help him gain admission to medical school, attending the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Later in life he published a book, The Classical Music Experience, replete with a soundtrack and audio narrated by Kevin Kline. In addition, he and his late wife Joan were philanthropists who endowed chairs in surgery at Mount Sinai, Johns Hopkins, and the Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Medicine in Jerusalem; an Aortic Disease Center at Mount Sinai; a research professorship at the Chan Harvard School of Public Health; a Center for Clinical and Translational Research at the University of Toledo; an annual research conference at the Society of Vascular Surgery; and, at the American College of Surgeons, established two major awards - The Promising Investigator Award which has encouraged a generation of young researchers, and an Innovation Award that recognizes established researchers. He is survived by his daughter Wendy (Andrew H. Miller), son William (Elizabeth), four grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He is also survived by his stepchildren Fred Cowett (Diana), and Anne Cowett, and two step-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please contribute in his memory to the Department of Surgery at Mount Sinai.

Living overseas for the last 40 years, I´ve only (sadly) read this news a year late of his (and Joan´s) passing. Dr. Jacobson was my doctor at Mt. Sinai back in 1979 and following visits over the years. My mom shared her rum ball recipe with Joan and we´d stayed in touch for decades - last time in touch maybe 10 years ago, and I´ve tried to find the classical music selection he made. What a wonderful life he had and I´m so grateful to have know them both. My condolences to his family.

Jack was a dear colleague, generous with his time and advice, always teaching his colleagues and brilliant in his care of patients! He was the father of microsurgery... work which was truly deserving of a Nobel Prize! He enjoyed sharing his ever-innovating ideas. I had so many wonderful moments with Jack...wonderful memories! At the fifthieth anniversaryof the Society of Vascular Surgery I sponsered a dinner at Navy Pier in Chicago. Knowing the Dr. Jacobson would be there, I had cigars for the crowd. I purchased Griffiths churchhills. Dr. Jacobson complimented me on my choice of cigar to top off a great evening. Julius loved the cigar and it topped off a lovely evening.

I loved Joan and Jack Jacobson. Before my retirement from the American College of Surgeons, I managed the Jacobson Innovation Award program and enjoyed working with them on the selection of the recipient and the formal award dinner. Their generosity, philanthropy, and ongoing interest in the next generation of innovators truly defined the concept of paying it forward. I feel honored and privileged to have known them. Giants come along very rarely, and Jack Jacobson rises to the top of that list. On behalf of the many surgeons and countless patients who benefited from your contributions ,R.I.P. dear friend.

I loved Joan and Jack Jacobson. Before retirement from the American College of Surgeons, I managed the Jacobson Innovation Award program and enjoyed working with them on the recipient selection and subsequent award dinner. Over the years and after trips to New York, I was blessed and privileged to get to know them better. Never have I experienced such care, generosity, joy and commitment. It's not very often that giants come along, and the surgical world and countless patients are the better for his presence and contributions. Jack and Joan truly understood the concept of paying it forward. R.I.P. dear friend.

I had the good task of ensuring the satisfaction of Dr&Mrs Jacobson with the conduct of their philanthropy at the American College of Surgeons . Dr. Jacobson was always more concerned about the recipients´ achievement and scientific impact of the Jacobson Awards than personal exaltation. Knowing Dr&Mrs Jacobson was a professional and personal joy. They were distinctively memorable philanthropists.

Dr. Jacobson helped so many, including the patients whom I referred. When my aunt was diagnosed with blood clots in the leg, her first vascular surgery consultant recommended leg amputation. Dr. Jacobson graciously took on her case. A true gentleman, he said, "it would be an honor to treat your aunt." He saved her leg and repaired her aortic aneurysm. I am grateful as we grieve his loss.

Dr. Jacobson operated on my mother many years ago. He was the third vascular surgeon she had seen, and was so incredibly impressive that there was no question as to who would do the surgery.
The operation was successful, and he prolonged my mother's life. I will be forever grateful for the care he gave her, as well as his great kindness to her and to me.
He was a gift to the medical profession, and a blessing to his patients.
My deepest sympathy to his family.
