PETER GOULD Obituary

GOULD--Peter C. Peter C. Gould was an exceptional man. Described as a brilliant and trusted attorney, he will be long and lovingly remembered for his whole hearted devotion to his family and friends, his commitment to his clients and colleagues and all those fortunate enough to be the recipients of his time and talent and wisdom - including his support for the arts, as well as always doing what he could to encourage and inspire young people to fulfill their potential. He made a positive difference in the lives of every person he touched, and that is the true measure of a life well lived - a man who genuinely cared about people and bringing out the best in them. In the early morning hours of Sunday, February 27, 2022 with his closest family members by his side, he died peacefully of complications from COPD. Peter Carroll Gould, the son of Mildred and Douglas Gould, grew up in New Rochelle, NY, with his sister Patty and brother James (deceased). He attended the Iona Preparatory School and then CW Post College, followed by Columbia Law School. He spent the majority of his illustrious legal career as managing partner with Sabin, Bermant & Gould, serving as the longtime General Counsel to Advance Publications. His clients always benefitted from his sound advice. His colleagues admired and respected him for his leadership and his exemplary character and integrity, and the camaraderie he fostered. During the early part of his life chapter, he began his family with his wife Barbara Gould (deceased) and their daughter Christina. He went on to marry and devote himself to his beloved wife Claire Gould. Peter was a champion and benefactor of the arts. For ten years, he served as the Chairman of Yaddo, an artist community that nurtures the creative process by providing an opportunity for all kinds of artists to work without interruptions in a supportive environment. Such notables as Leonard Bernstein and Truman Capote spent time at Yaddo in Saratoga, New York. He was honored by Yaddo at a gala before stepping down as Chairman. He was also honored for his work as a longtime supporter of the AllStars Project, which uses the power of performance to help motivate young people to tap into their potential to go out into the world and do good for themselves and their community. To all those blessed to know him, he was a true friend and a trusted colleague you could always count on to be there for you with a generosity of spirit that made him stand out. But his most significant accomplishment and priority, which he readily stated, was his family, for whom he was their foundation, their everything. Always present and loving, he was committed to their well-being, encouraging and supporting them in the realization of their dreams - taking pride in their successes, as well as being there during challenging times. There are no words that adequately express the depth of their love and their profound loss. Peter is survived not only by his wife, Claire, and his daughter, Christina, but by her husband, Sam Mogilner, their children, Peter Joseph and Charlotte Elodie, his sister, Patricia Gould O'Brien, nieces Margaret Attwood O'Brien and Catherine O'Brien Yaffa and grandniece and nephew, Jessica Gould Yaffa and Douglas Charles Yaffa. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Yaddo: Yaddo.org/individual-giving/

Having shared a New Warrior weekend with Peter and many many I group meetings I can say without qualification that he was the most elegant, generous kind and cool dude I have ever known. He is sorely missed.

I was introduced to Peter through Mitch Teplitsky many years ago. I have only kind words to share about Peter. He was a smart, caring, kind and generous man and I enjoyed his passion for the arts. I only regret not having had the opportunity to spend more time with him.

I served with Peter Gould on the Magazine Publishers Association's Legal Affairs Committee in the 1970s and 1980s. Peter was an excellent lawyer, an effective Committee Chair and, most of all, a wonderful human being.
