Fabulous Nanny

For those who could not attend her Memorial Service, here is what I said:
My Darling Nanny…
Beautiful, brave, strong
Loving, lovable, lovely
Courageous, wise, inspiring...
She inspired us all with her fierce independence, her sharp mind, her physical beauty, her sense of style and most of all with her love.
She would always say, "I'm so lucky I have such a wonderful family." to which I would reply, "yes, and it started with you."
She set the tone for our close knit, compassionate, loving and generous family. For my entire life I either saw or talked to her on the phone daily. When I missed a day it was simply because despite her modern sense of style, she never made the leap to call waiting. Considering how popular she was and how much she loved to chat, I became familiar with receiving a busy signal.
She did love to chat, she also loved art, novels, the New Yorker and the NY Times. You could talk to her about anything: stocks, politics, theater & sports. In a city full of baseball fans, she was one of the most loyal followers of the Yankees. Until I had the Yankee app on my phone, I went to Nanny for updates on who they were playing and when.
We shared a love of the Yankees and a love for fashion. Shopping was one of her favorite activities. She could walk a million miles if it was to Bloomingdales and back. I would be resting on the bench while she tirelessly sifted through the racks for the classiest on-trend item in the store.
You could always count on her for an honest opinion. She was not afraid to tell me that she was not a fan of my blue nail polish and she was not so easy to buy presents for. If she didn't like your selection, she'd ask. "what is this?" ...but when you got it right, her appreciation was the best reward.
It's amazing how many lives she touched. I was so proud to have such a beautiful, smart, modern, cool grandmother, I showed her off to all of my friends and told everyone I knew about her. Friends would regularly ask, “how's nanny?” I would proudly show off her picture and say, "she's 95. And isn't she beautiful and stylish and doesn't she look so young?"
Awe inspiring that is what she was and that is what she will always be…for her memory lives on in me. I will always remember that when I was in preschool, she picked me up from school every day, in elementary school she chaperoned school trips and brought me my favorite cookies from the bakery after school. She tuned into Golden Girls during our many slumber parties so we could laugh together, she squeezed me fresh orange juice and made me breakfast in the morning. She eagerly attended every single performance I did, complimented my latest fashion find and held my hand and told me about her courtship with Poppy. These memories and so many more will stay alive and continue to inspire me every day as I strive to embrace life and live the remarkable life she lived here on this earth.

I will always treasure the good times I had with Aunt Sylvia as a child and as an adult. I especially enjoied my visits to her home as a child when Uncle Ben was still alive. Then all these years later re connecting with her as an adult and spending time with her every year in Coronado. She was always so encouraging no matter the circumstances. It makes me so sad to know she is gone.
