Dustin Johns Obituary

December 15, 1985 - February 7, 2011

CRANE Dustin Johns was born in Odessa, Texas and grew up in Crane, Texas. He was educated in the Crane Independent School District, graduating in May of 2004. In April of 2006, Dustin chose to enlist in the United States Army, completing his Basic Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in Aug.of 2006. He has been assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Hood, Texas since Aug. of 2006.

Dustin served his country overseas in Iraq from November 2007 to Feb. 2009. During this time, he received several commendations, including the Purple Heart.

Dustin was a warrior with a poet's heart and a soul wounded by the loss of comrades in battle. His choice was to push through the pain, to love more deeply, to bring joy to those who shared his life. He cared deeply for his family and extended that care to his friends and his comrades in arms; always ready to listen, always there to help. He served his country with pride, loved his family with all his heart, and left this world too soon.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Billy Irl and Janie Butler.

Dustin is survived by his son, Jaxon Johns, his mother, Cynthia Johns, his brother, Daniel Johns, his father, Dee Johns, his brothers Jason Johns, Justin Johns, Dustin DeBerry, Casey Johns, his sister, Jaclyn McCabe, and his uncle, Lee Butler.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Crane with Army Chaplin Capt. Curtis Hulshizer officiating. Burial will follow in the Crane County Cemetery with arrangements under the care and direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.

I knew Dustin very well and he was one of my dearest friends. I hadn't talked to him in a few days and then on the day of his funeral I got the news that he had passed from his friend. It breaks my heart that I had absolutely no idea what was going on or what had happened or was not able to attend his funeral. Dustin is someone that I love dearly and he will always hold a special place in my heart.

I didn't know your son but I want to express my sympathy for your loss. Dustin was an amazing young man who fought for this country, that is the bravest thing anyone can do. His patriotism and bravery touches everyone that lives in this country. I thank you for raising such an amazing son and will always think of him every time I see an american flag. I know words can't replace your son, nothing could. Many people are going to miss him but he will always be in your heart and ours. May God bless you.

I do not know Dustin or your family, but like the others here, I just wanted to let you know I will stay a prayer for you and your family in this time of sorrow. Also Thank you for allowing your son to serve for our country and paying the ultimate price for our freedom..his life. He was awarded a purple heart, so I know he must have done some kind of act of bravery to save others lives.
