Richard Manning Obituary

Richard C. "Teach" Manning passed away peacefully Friday, March 31, 2017, in St. Clair Memorial Hospital, just two days before his 65th birthday. He succumbed to conditions related to congestive heart failure.
He graduated from California University of Pennsylvania in 1974 with a bachelor of arts degree in education, with an emphasis in industrial arts. Somewhere along the way in his career, he became known by many as "Teach."
He had many talents, but working with wood was his favorite. He renovated his mother's kitchen, designing and building cabinets made out of cherry wood. There were many other handmade items in the house.
Among his attributes was caring for other people, which included helping with various projects, for which he lent out many tools and provided an array of technical and professional assistance.
When he was not working on projects, he enjoyed riding motorcycles and going to flea markets in search of bargains and finds of the past.
After 32 years, he retired from his position as an industrial arts teacher at Mt. Lebanon High School, where he completed his student teaching. His first teaching job was at Fox Hills High School, which lasted approximately three years.
In addition to his woodworking skills, he could repair just about anything, often using his creativity for improvement.
He was a lifelong member of Ruthfred Lutheran Church, where he married his wife Shirley Huser June 17, 2006. After a few years of marriage, she suddenly passed away April 10, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his father, Charles Manning in 1974, and his mother, Lois Manning in 2012.
He is survived by cousins Carolyn Pleasant of Portland, Ore., David Harding (Dianne) of Columbus, Ohio, and Kathy Anglin (Jim) of Upper St. Clair, as well as many friends and former students.
Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Paul Henney Memorial Chapel, 5570 Library Road, Bethel Park, where a prayer service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, followed by a final word and benediction in the chapel at Jefferson Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to Ruthfred Lutheran Church, 3401 Patterson Road, Bethel Park, PA 15102; Animal Advocates, P.O. Box 8480, Pittsburgh, PA 15220; or a charity of the donor's choice.

I would like to express my sincere condolences to the Manning family on their loss. I first met Rich through Richard Paulson who was my wood-shop teacher, friend and mentor at Mt. Lebanon.
Rich Manning was a fine man and teacher and will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Rick was a character with a rage to live life, but to do that in a moral context. He was a genius with mechanical things. I've been friends with him since elementary school. Two experiences I remember and will share are--- working with him at the South Park dairy queen during high school and then tearing out at closing time in his old Ford falcon with Steppenwolf's born to be wild at max volume. In 1982 we took a Mercedes 180SL from a Drive-Away place in New Kensington and drove to Oakland California and explored The West on the road stopping at the headwaters of the Colorado River, at Park City and Salt Lake City Utah, and at Harrahs in south Lake Tahoe Nevada. We also explored San Luis Obispo county, the Sierras---Sequoia and Yosemite national parks, and LA. I will miss Rick in this life but know I will see him again in the next one.
