Charles Theron Matthews, age 96, passed away on the morning of August 18 in Plano, TX. Charles was born near Livingston, TN and spent most of his younger years in Leesburg, FL. He was enlisted with the 27th Battalion of the Seabees in the US Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific theatre. He attended the University of Texas while still with the Navy, graduating in 1946 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He married Marie Jett in Houston in 1949 and they had been married for 68 years this past March. Charles was employed by the Texas Pipe Line Company for his entire career, working in Houston, TX, Raceland, LA, Salem, IL, Atlanta, GA, Hearne, TX, Wichita Falls, TX, Midland, TX, Lafayette, LA and finally retired in 1983 after returning to Houston as one of several vice-presidents of the Company. He was a long-time member of The First United Methodist Church of Sugar Land, TX. He is survived by his wife, Marie, age 90, two sons, Cris of Plano, TX and Robert, presently living in north Africa, five grandchildren, James Matthews, Ellen Dimon, Charlotte Snoberger, Ben Matthews, and Anna Di Carlo, and three great-grandchildren, Sarah, Ben and Ani, with a fourth great-grandchild on the way. A viewing was held at the Pace Stancil Funeral Home in Cleveland, TX on Wednesday, August 23 from 5:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and a Graveside Service was held at the Cleveland Memorial Cemetery on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. with Dr. James McMillan of the First United Methodist Church of Cleveland officiating.
