I had the distinct honor and privilege to work with Humble police officer Eugene Martin. As an Humble PD patrol sergeant, I often wished I had a dozen more officers just like Eugene. He came to work everyday with a big boyish smile on his face, ready to go out and face his calls head on. He had an exemplary attitude towards the Humble Police Department, his coworkers and his sworn duty as a Texas peace officer. If he was feeling the stress of the job or was just plain tired, you'de never know it from that Texas-size grin. No matter what may have transpired during his tour of duty that particular day, be it an armed robbery, domestic violence call, or maybe even being spat on: Eugene took it all in stride. Despite facing this sort of thing a regular basis, at end of the day officer Eugene Martin would leave the police station with that same boyish smile on his face. When I needed assistance with a combative suspect, there was no one on the force that I trusted more to have my back than Eugene Martin. Eugene's professional demeanor never waivered and his kindness to those who needed our help the most knew no bounds, especially when a child was involved. Eugene would always stand up and fight, for those who could not fight for themselves. Please know that I was proud, so very proud to call Eugene my friend. I can only hope that Eugene's family, friends or any other souls that reached out to his during his time on this Earth, may take some degree of comfort in words.
