Jeannette Slack Obituary

Jeannette Aguilar Slack, 95, died peacefully at her home in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on January 6, 2019, surrounded by her five children and other members of her loving family.

Jeannette was born on October 22, 1923 in Casablanca, Morocco, to Elise Martinez and Marcelin Aguilar. Jeannette and her brother Marcel spent their early years in Boujad, Morocco. She graduated from secondary school in Casablanca during World War II. In 1944 she met John H. Slack, who served as a U.S. Air Force captain in Morocco. They wed in February 1945. In March 1946, she sailed with her infant daughter on one of the first ships transporting war brides to the U.S. from the European front. For the next forty years, Jeannette, John and their five children lived in more than twenty locations, including: Long Island, NY; Bombay, India; Hamilton, Bermuda; Lookout Mountain, TN; Avon, Simsbury and Greenwich, CT; Tulsa, OK; Palm Beach Gardens and Singer Island, FL; Grasse, France; Ipswich, MA; and Camarillo, CA. After the passing of her husband in 2003, Jeannette lived in Kingwood, TX and Chattanooga.

Jeannette is survived by her children: Christine Yoos, Smithtown, NY; John Slack (Sandi), Houston, TX; Steven Slack (Amie), Chattanooga, TN; Richard Slack (Jill), Raleigh, NC; Paul Slack (Lisa), Ipswich, MA; and her grandchildren: Michele, Laura, Alison, Christine, John, Danielle, Susanna, Steven, Andrew, Matthew, Christian, John Peyton, Annie and Olivia; thirteen great-grandchildren and her many relatives in the U.S. and France.

A woman of the Greatest Generation, Jeannette was known for her impeccable manner, style and steadfast devotion to her family. She loved travel, created beautiful homes in every location and was an extraordinary cook, particularly of French and Moroccan cuisine. She will be forever loved and missed by her family.

Her remains ultimately will be taken to Grasse, France by her family where she will be interred alongside her parents and brother in the Aguilar family plot at Le Cimetiere Ste. Brigitte. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to the Salvation Army or to the charity of your choice.
