John Davis Obituary

Intellectual property values took a steep drop worldwide on November 6, 2019, when John Renfro Davis of Cut And Shoot, Texas, shuffled off his mortal coil and joined the Unlimiteds. John was born on October 7, 1950 in Dahlonega, Georgia to Louis L. and Orma Waller Davis, and quickly set about becoming a man of letters and lore. There were several times during his childhood when his brain threatened to outweigh the rest of his body. As a result, his mind was open 24/7. Vast as it was, it did not judge. John met Melissa Brady in 1969 when they were cast as a married couple in a play and the future was settled. On June 9, 1973, they were wedded for life. It would be quite a life, too, literally deep in the heart of Texas; a place called Cut And Shoot. The Davis' would spend their working days in service to the Splendora Independent School District. Thanks to the great American traditions of non-union wages and teacher retirement, they were able to travel widely during a comfortable retirement. (John pronounced himself "very good at retirement," a point which nobody could argue.) Though the couple had no children of their own, there are hordes of students from Mr. Davis's English classes and student bodies who would volunteer for the position in a minute. To this day, he is held in the highest esteem you can imagine. The longer you knew him, the more intense it became. We will not see the likes of him again. John is survived by his loving wife, Melissa Brady Davis, his brother William F. Davis, and his many friends.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 2:00 pm in The Chapel at Conroe Funeral Directors. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 8, 2019 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the funeral home. John will be laid to rest at Garden Park cemetery in Conroe, Texas. www.conroefuneraldirectors.org for funeral home address.

I just researched John Renfro Davis of Conroe, TX after seeing an obituary my mother saved of his mother, Orma Davis, which listed John Renfro Davis of Conroe, TX as one of her survivors. My family lived next door to the Davis family in Hot Springs, AR. We played with Bill because he was closer in age to us, but John was the older brother of Bill who occasionally gave us his time. He was always so nice and friendly and tolerant, that it is not surprising he became a teacher in his adulthood and shared himself with so many young people. I am sorry to learn of his death four years later, but I am still sending my condolences to John's wife Melissa, and to our childhood friend, Bill. He will always be missed by you two.

Mr. Davis was my favorite teacher. He didn't know it because I sat in the back of the room and kept a low profile. He had my attention and I was very interested in whatever it was he was teaching. I was privileged to have him for both 8th grade English and home room. He taught us about literature, lyrics and poetry and would make us read poetry in front of the class. I hated that part but it was good for me. When I was dating my wife, we would write each other poems. My only experience was from Mr. Davis's class. She loved it! I later found out that she minored in college English. I was able to hold my own and even wrote and read her a poem at our wedding! Thank you Mr. Davis for enriching our lives!

As a prior member of the SISD Board of Trustees and life long community member of Splendora, I was blessed to have the privilege of knowing Mr. & Ms. Davis. Those who crossed the path with Mr. Davis are fortunate. Our district was enriched by his presents and leadership he shared with our children. The good Lord apparently needed an intellect by his side. God bless you Ms. Davis. Our community loss is heavens gain!

I only knew John through his posts on the LitForum (Compuserve) but his wit and intelligence brightened my day. May his memory be for a blessing.

Dear Melissa, I am so sorry for your loss. Even though I meet you in your darkest moments it was such an honor to have been there for you and your family. Your stories of you, John, love and life were beautiful and inspiring. I am sorry I did not get to say goodbye and give you one last hug. But please know that you have been in my thoughts. Let the music carry you through these times and bring warmth and peace to your loving heart ❤.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I've known John--virtually, we never met in person, alas--for many years. Such a kind, perceptive soul--and very funny. We'll miss him.

Many spoke today of heartfelt memories regarding their relationship with John: how he cared, loved, helped, encouraged, and inspired them during his life and how much he would be missed. It truly was a celebration of his life. Although I wish I had known him better, I can testify that in every instance he was an encouragement to myself and members of my family. He excelled in so much and we who are left could only be better by following his example. You are missed.

I am deeply saddened by this tremendous loss. John was undoubtedly one of the smartest men I have ever had the privilege of knowing. He and I sparred politically many times and I learned so much from him. He shared his ongoing insight in helping me with the grieving process of losing my son, and for that I am eternally grateful. You will be forever missed Mr. John Davis. Rest In Peace my Friend.

From singing and playing his guitar to our 7th grade English class in the 1970's to having the privilege of working alongside him as a teacher-I came to have the utmost respect for Mr. Davis's wit and knowledge. I'm going to miss his comments on my political Facebook posts and his posts about his and Melissas retirement adventures. Thank you John and Melissa for your years of friendship!

Mr Davis was a friend, role model, and mentor. I spent many days as a student and as a teacher laughing with and learning from him. He will be dearly missed. Praying peace and comfort for the family.
