Raymond Johnson Obituary

Dr. Raymond (Ray) Johnson, Jr., MD, age 77, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2022 with his wife and sister by his side. Raymond was born on July 14, 1944 in Natchitoches, Louisiana to Raymond an Roma Johnson, who eventually settled in Magnolia, Texas where he was raised with his sister Dianne. After graduating as valedictorian from Magnolia High School in 1962, Raymond attended Texas A & M University and was a proud member of the Core of Cadets. In 1963, Raymond transferred to Abilene Christian University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. He worked as CPA for Arthur Anderson in Houston for 7 years before deciding to pursue a career in medicine. Raymond graduated from Baylor College of medicine in 1976 and completed his Family Practice residency in 1979, after which he moved to Conroe and began his medical practice at Sadler Clinic. Raymond practiced family medicine for 37 years, cared deeply about his patients and their families, and was dearly loved and respected by both his patients and his colleagues alike.

After retiring from medicine in October of 2015, Ray was able to spend more time pursuing his many hobbies including custom gun making, reading, gourmet cooking, watching Astros baseball and college football (especially Texas A & M), fly fishing, and hunting. He went on hunts in Alaska, New Zealand, The Yukon, southwest Texas, New Mexico, Montana and Colorado, where he also enjoyed fly fishing. However, the times he treasured most were spent hunting white-tail deer on "The Ranch" in west Texas with his family and friends. Ray was an associate member of the American Custom Gun Makers Guild and crafted beautiful custom rifles from wood blanks of French, English, and Turkish walnut. He was a lifetime member of the NRA.

Ray loved to share stories of growing up in Magnolia as well as relating facts about baseball and anything having to do with World War II. After receiving his first Lionel Train set one Christmas, he added Lionel trains to his list of hobbies and was in the process of building a Lionel train layout that filled an entire room, complete with a mountain and a village.

Preceded in death by his first wife Anne Laurie and parents Roma and Raymond Johnson, Sr., Ray is survived by his wife Kim of 32 years, sister Dianne and her husband Steve Dorris, son Craig and wife Janna, son Matthew and wife Michelle, daughter Mandy and husband Kevin Hutchins, step-daughters Amber Whatley and Dawn Jones, grandchildren Josh Annie, and Taylor Johnson, James Sitka, Leanne and Keith Johnson, Hunter, Hannah, and Harper Hutchins, Brooklyn and Brayden Whatley, two great grandchildren Callen and Carter Sitka, nephew Parker Dorris and wife Sonia, great niece Roma, many cousins and other relatives. He is also survived by his precious rat terrier Sugar whom he loved and spoiled rotten.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 2pm at Metcalf Funeral Directors, 1801 E. White Oak Terrace, Conroe, Texas 77304

Dr. Johnson was my doctor for many years until Sadler Clinic closed its doors. He was a nice man and a good doctor. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of David's childhood friend, Dr. Johnson, whom we called 'Ray.' He was a brilliant doctor who treated David, our daughter and me during his entire career. Also, a wonderful family man and friend who had a rare memory for people and a wide range of stories and trivia, he will always hold a special place in our hearts.
