Vera Smith Hillis, 87, passed away peacefully on January 6th, 2018 in Humble TX, following a brief illness. Vera was born on July 24, 1930 in Lyerly GA. She graduated from McKenzie Business College in Chattanooga TN and worked with the Tennessee Valley Authority for seven years before relocating to East Point GA, where she enjoyed a 28-year career with Bayer Chemicals. After her retirement, she moved to the Humble area to be closer to her two daughters and their families. While she resided happily in Texas for the past 20 years, friends and family in Georgia always remained an important part of her life. In Texas, Vera enjoyed her home and garden, volunteering at the local school, and sewing, knitting and socializing with friends at the Humble Senior Activity Center. Vera was sweet, smart, funny, strong and independent, and was well loved by her family and friends. Vera was preceded in death by her son Jeffrey Hillis, and by her parents, Elizabeth Maxwell Smith and W.H. Smith, Sr. of Lyerly GA, and her four siblings, Lewis Smith, Bess Fletcher, W.H. Smith, Jr. and Margaret Webb. She is survived by daughters Amy Raihill and Jennifer Verkamp and son-in-law Ed Verkamp, all of Humble TX. She is also survived by one grandson, Kenneth Hillis of Lovejoy GA, and by one granddaughter, Erin Cavarretta, and her husband Chris Cavarretta of Conroe TX, and by several nieces and nephews in Georgia, all of whom she dearly loved. She was blessed to live in the home she loved all the days of her life. We will always treasure the memories created with her. Although we will miss her always, we take comfort in the knowledge that she joins her family in a better place. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes support to Vera's lifelong church home, the Lyerly Baptist Church. Memorial contributions may be sent to P.O. Box 135, Lyerly GA 30730.

Dear Vera, i have waited so long to honor you. My words simply would not come. But tonight i am inspired. You have sown the seeds of the good life for your children, showing patience and wisdom along the way. As i write, your granddaughter lies in labor with your not so tiny baby great grandson due to arrive at any moment. You have given the world strong and decisive offspring. Your walk on this earth has been deeply meaningful and your gentle good natured way of being has been shared and absorbed in ways we may not have the words for. Rest assured, you have mattered. Congratulations dear one, thank you for your presence.

I've had trouble knowing what to say, or what I could say, that could truly encapsulate everything I feel. Grandmom was probably my best friend on top of everything else, and remembering everything she's taught me is the most important way to remember her. Her Christmas card told me to have a better year this year, and as hard as that is now, I plan on trying to see that through, because that's what she would want.

Vera was one of the kindest people I've ever met. She was like a grandmother to me. Every time Erin and I would go over to her house after school she always had a snack waiting for us.She was always in good spirits and happy to see us. She always made me feel special, like I was a granddaughter to her as well. She will be missed very much and I'm very blessed to have known her.May she rest in peace.
With love, Lauren.

We were so saddened to hear about Vera's passing, it just broke our hearts. She was so special to us, and we loved every moment we had the opportunity to visit with her. Her sweet southern laugh and charm will not be forgotten! We are blessed for having known her, and grateful for her children, whom we dearly call friends, but are more like family. Since Vera was a godly woman, we know she is with the Lord. II Corinthians 5:8: "We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be absent from the body and at home with the Lord." Vera is now with her family who has gone before her, as she shines her light down on those left behind. Our deepest sympathies, Pat and Tim
