Gary was a teacher, a mentor, and a friend. He guided me through many years of my college education and then some. I still miss him and think of him often. Gary was the major influence for me in my career path and he inspired me to find "riches" outside of having money. I will forever be grateful and I will pass on that philosophy we shared on life to my kids and to all the students that will be part of my life (even if only for a short time). Of course, I will always credit Gary Downing.

I worked with Gary for six years at Metro. He was a mentor and a friend. Gary was a special kind of man that had a positive impact on all that knew him. Rest in peace Gary, I'm glad the paths of our lives crossed.

I am so sad to hear of your loss. Uncle Gary was a Giant of a man. Although, I have not seen him since I was a little girl I recently spoke with him on the phone while he was visiting my father, Clarke Downing. We had a wonderful conversation and I will always be thankful for that. Rest in Peace Uncle Gary you are in God's hands now.

My mother Norma Downing, told me that when I was a little girl, I loved Gary. I remember seeing a painting he did of me turning a somersault and wondering what it was, it was a bit abstract, but I still told people that it was me! I used to cling to him and ask him to pick me up. Not so very long ago, perhaps 2000, my own daughter Sara and I spent a wonderful afternoon at the Omaha Zoo, with both Gary and Dolores. I know Gary will be missed greatly, but maybe memories like these can help to keep him alive in our hearts.

Gary was instrumental in helping me to see as a photographer. He challanged me in my classes with him to always push for something more in my work. To not just settle but to do the best I can. I have had a commercial photography business that has supported my wife and I and our three kids for 25 years. Whenever I tell people how I got started the effect Gary had on me is at the top of the list.
Now we can pray for him and he can pray for us in a way that is so much deeper than in a classroom and I know that he will help me like he never could before. Push on to sainthood Gary and dont settle for anything less. Our family will be praying for your family. Peace.

Gary was always a giant of a person and someone I deeply respected and loved. I am a blessed person to have gotten to work with him. Your families loss is tremendous and so is the worlds. My mother Ardis, told me once in about 1955: "Gary is just like family". I was as close to Gary as anyone all my life and I will miss his presence. He enjoyed high culture and everything in between. Good bye my friend.
