Matias Quintanilla Obituary

Rev. Matias V. Quintanilla, 80, of Pasadena, TX went to be with His Lord on Nov. 8, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in El Rancho Laguna Larga, Matamoros, Tamp. Mexico on Aug. 7, 1931 to Juan and Luisa Quintanilla. Rev. Quintanilla was a graduate of the Valley Baptist Academy, where his studies were interrupted for two years to serve in the U.S. Army. He returned from Korea to marry Cristina Aguilera on Aug. 25, 1957 with the money they had saved. He served in the Army reserves for ten years. Rev. Quintanilla also did further studies at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary through their extension program. Rev. Quintanilla served as a full time pastor for 45 years with pastorates in San Benito, Harlingen, Lyford, Rio Hondo, Brownsville, Pasadena, Donna, Robstown, Eagle Lake and his last and longest pastorate Edinburg. After his retirement he served as the interim pastor of Iglesia Bautista El Salvador in League City for 13 years. God used him in a mighty way to lead people to the Lord, grow the churches he served and leave a lasting impression with his kindness and compassion. Matias is survived by his wife of 54 years Cristina, son Matias Jr. (Eva), Daniel (Genie), Dwight David (Priscilla), Luisa (Freddy), Ruth (David), 14 grandchildren and 8 (one on the way) great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Fidencia, Concha, Andrea, his only brother Julian and scores of nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the oncology staff at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Hospital for their wonderful care of our loving father and husband. A celebration of life will be held at the Grandview Funeral home in Pasadena with the Rev. Daniel Quintanilla officiating. Visitation will be Friday, November 11, 2011 from 5PM to 8PM at Grand View Funeral Home. I still think about Matias. He was such a pleasure to be around, in fact, I was talking to someone about him just the other day. One thing about him that I like to remember is that he could make any hat look good. I really do miss him

My deepest and most heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of you during this time of hurt and sorrow. Your dad will always hold a special place in my heart for the way God used him during the time he was the pastor in Donna. You were the first christian family that I got to know when I became a christian many years ago. I still think about all of you and the things that we laughed and joked about. May God bless and comfort in the days to come.

Tio Matias always had a smile on his face when i saw him...even though he is my mother's cousin, i always called him "Tio". He was always very kind and i knew He loved the Lord. and I know that he is rejoicing with his mom and my grandmother up in heaven! What a reunion we will all have when we are called to Heaven! Pastor Matias was our pastor in Edinburg when my husband was licensed and later ordained. It was an honor to serve the Lord with him. He also loved to hear me play the violin at church and often requested a musical expression for a Sunday morning. He will always have a special place in our hearts! "Well done, good and faithful servant!" We'll see you again one day "sharing in our Master's happiness."

My name is Ruben Rojas. I first met Matias Quintanilla as a young boy, into my teenage and early years of college at Iglesia Bautista Nueva Vida in Edinburg, TX. I have so many good memories of my pastor, especially when he baptized me in the 5th grade. I am now 35 years old and remember the time as if it were yesterday. As a young boy, I remember how he used to curl his trademark mustache on the tips. I once tried to outgrow his mustache by growing mine, but it didn't suit me as good as it did him and mustaches weren't really in for 18 year olds at the time. I also remember how he would always hang out at “Heck and Beck to drink coffee and mingle with the locals. He sure loved to socialize. He was always so friendly and encouraging to me also. I remember when I was learning to play guitar in my teenage years, he invited me over to the parsonage to see his 12 string guitar. He let me play it and I remember jamming out with him for a while that day. Old school of course.

In regards to his role as pastor, he was definitely a man of conviction as he preached the word of God boldly and with authority. His deep and powerful voice always got my attention whenever he spoke. When he was pastor at Nueva Vida, we always sang the song “Bienvenidos. It was a song that we always sang during the service to welcome the people every week. I think he loved this song, so that he could go around and shake hands with everyone. He also never ended the service without giving an invitation to receive Christ or to pray at the altar. Lastly, before he dismissed us to our homes, he would bless us by saying, “ahora el amor de Dios, la uncion de Su Espiritu Santo, vaya con cada uno de vosotros, ahora y siempre, AMEN. He really loved and cared for every member of the church equally. Our family, the Rojas family, also loved and cared for him and his wife very much. Even after he retired, whenever he and his wife were in the area, he would drop in to visit my mom and dad at their home and always asked about the members of the church. Our deepest condolences go out to the Quintanilla family from the Rojas family. Thanks for sharing your husband and dad with us during his years of ministry at Iglesia Baustista Nueva Vida. He will be greatly missed.

Matias was a dear friend of mine. We first met at Taqueria Agave in Pasadena and became close friends. I visited the church he pastored in League City several times and was always blessed. I will truly miss him.
