Rick Skillern Obituary

Rick Wayne Skillern went to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday October 7th, 2011 at the age of 58. He was born on December 5, 1952 in Hot Springs, AR to Elzie and Hollie Skillern. He married his loving wife, Katherine Gail Thomas, on September 4, 1992.

Rick loved most being actively involved with his children and wife, and also collecting Shell memorabilia, supporting his Razorbacks, riding his motorcycle, and giving others the pleasure of his photography.

He was an honor student at Hot Springs High School and attended Centenary College in Shreveport, LA. He was an Operations Supervisor for Shell Oil Company, a title that he worked hard to obtain through a distinguished career of 30+ Years. He was a member of Deer Park United Methodist Church.

Rick was a devoted loving husband, Daddy, and Paw Paw. Rick was preceded in death by his father Elzie Skillern, and infant son Brad Skillern. He is survived by his wife of 19 years Kathy, his stepson Quinten, son Derrick, daughter Alyssa, former wife Cheryl Rummings, and their daughters Tiffany and Brittany. He is survived also by his mother Hollie M. Bryant Skillern, his brothers Bruce, Steve, John, and their wives Linda, Jetta, and Sandi Skillern, as well as, his sister Breeanne, several nieces, nephews, cousins and his grandchildren Dalton, Trent, and Aidan Hodge.

He will be most remembered for the love he showed his family and friends. We are deeply saddened by his unexpected departure, but we know that he is with his Lord.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Grand View Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., at Deer Park United Methodist Church, 1300 E. 13th St., Deer Park, TX 77536 (281) 930-1300. Kathy, May God bless your family and help you through this time. Like everyone, I have many happy memories of Rick. We hung out a lot when he moved to Houston. He was a great guy. Yes another cousin!

My Uncle Rick was a great guy who was taken too soon. I guess he was needed elsewhere, but the Skillern family sure misses him right now. It was wonderful to see how loved he was by everyone who knew him, and I know we all have memories that make us smile, even through the tears. Tiffany, Brittany, Kathy, Derrick and Alyssa, you are in my thoughts and prayers. When I was little, I got to spend time on vacation with him and my cousins, and we all had a blast. He was funny, generous and just a very cool guy...I am sure he would have been the first to laugh when he heard us calling the Hogs for him after the service. Woo Pig Sooie, Uncle Rick, I hope up there is a McClard's and the Hogs always win! Rest in Peace.

Although I was three years behind Rick in school, he was so well known that I knew of him. My brother graduated the same year as Rick. Thank-you for sharing his life in photos. I enjoyed seeing how he lived his life and the love he obviously shared with his family. Another life taken too early. You have my deepest sympathy. Beth Butler HSHS 1974

You are all in my thoughts and prayers. My fondest memory of Rick (and Bruce and Steve - Johnny was too little) is wrestling on the mattress at Elzie and Holly's house. All of the "cousins" use to have a great time together. May God be with you all.
