Robert E. Ferguson

1926 - 2021

Robert Earl Ferguson, 94, of Montgomery, Texas passed away on May 15. Ferguson, grew-up in East Texas and graduated from Port Neches High School. He joined the Navy at age 17 and served in the Pacific aboard ships that engaged the Japanese fleet in the Philippines and near Tokyo Bay. Robert served with distinction and his bravery earned several citations and medals.

Returning to Texas following World War II, Ferguson attended college in Waxahachie, Texas where he focused on biblical studies and became an ordained minister in the Assemblies of God church. He preached at churches across the state and, while holding a revival in San Antonio, met his future wife Jo Land.

Robert and Jo were married for 69 years, had two children, Kathy and Robert, Junior, and together they created an extraordinary ministry that took them from small south Texas towns to numerous cities and countries around the world.

Initially, the Ferguson's successfully built and ministered at churches across Texas in the 1950's and eventually settled at Glad Tidings church in San Antonio.

Things changed in 1966 when Church leaders asked Robert and Jo to leave Texas and become missionaries. Robert pastored at a large Bahamian church in Nassau and then constructed a new church in Freeport on Grand Bahamas Island. That church is still thriving today.

During this time, Robert completed his graduate studies at Central Bible University and transitioned to serving as both a pastor and a professor of pastoral studies. He and Jo led churches and taught at universities and seminaries in Singapore, the Philippines and Okinawa, Japan.

During more than forty years of dynamic missionary service, several churches were established and dozens of Robert's students became effective pastors and church leaders. He leaves a legacy of building productive churches and developing people to advance faith in a kind and loving God.

His wife, Jo, his daughter, Kathy, her husband Russell Boates and his son Robert and his wife Debra and a grandson Matthew Summers, survive Robert.

A visitation for Robert was held Wednesday, May 19, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Metcalf Funeral Directors, 1801 E White Oak Terrace, Conroe, Texas. A celebration of life will occur Thursday, May 20, 2021 at 11:00 AM at April Sound Church, 67-1/2 April Wind Dr. S, Montgomery, Texas. An interment will occur at Houston National Cemetery, Houston, Texas.
